292 timing problems
#16
f700 and others---IT RUNS!!!!!!!AFTER 15 YEARS--SHE STARTED RIGHT UP!!!!!!I was about to give up and call a mechanic and have the 56 towed in,but f700 told me to take my time and that was all it took--I checked tdc and installed dist, for the 5 time and finally started---hey what is the throttle for on the dash?I did not have 1 in other truck.I have a choke-like wire and it was not connected and now I need to figure it out.Does it act like a choke? The truck sounds healthy but is idling very high.I will have to put timing light on it later, but must figure out what screws make her idle down some.THANKS MAN!!!!!I AM HAPPY!!!!!

Congratulations! Not sure about the dash throttle on your 56. My 54 1 ton had a pull push **** on the dash which could be used as a poor man's cruise control on the road. All the way out would put it at max rpm, and I could cruise at 46 mph. I figured it was meant to control a transmission power takeoff while the truck was stopped and in neutral.

Thanks you guys. How do I hook up the pull/push cable to the throttle-on dash -it says throttle.I also need to know which screw do I turn to lower my idle.I cannot wait to cruise!!!The clutch seems good---I almost forgot --the brakes don't work.I put more fluid in master cylinder and pumped brakes --but the pedal goes to floor and returns back up--like there is no resistance.ANY IDEAS!! THANKS ALL

Just to add to the confusion: My 1956 F100 272 has the TDC mark on the crank pulley 180 degrees off from the REAL TDC. Now, someone is sure to ask if I'm certain that the #1 was on the compression stroke, but that really doesn't matter. The cranl pulley makes one revolution every time the crank does, so it should read TDC whenever the #1 piston is at TDC, irrespective of whether it is on the compression or exhaust stroke. I had to remark the crank pulley after finding #1 TDC with a probe through the spark plug hole.

That is what I was doing wrong at the 1-4 tries.I really got frustrated cause the balancer said tdc and even 180 degrees out I thought 2 times would be all it would take, but finally I installed it right, and have 60 psi oil pressure, and no leaks. After not running since 1988 I was overjoyed. Now I have to get some brake pressure--Probably replace mast.cylinder first then go from there.Let you know more later-thanks
