ford put the stop to that when sold the bigger trucks to sterling. and it look almost like the old f-1 kind of. except without the big hood. it also looks smaller than the ranger. i remember when the ranger and the explorer were full size trucks. my ranger has more spunk then most trucks. i can hop off the line and get to 60mph in about 5 seconds. thats pretty quick for a little 2wd truck. i'd put a v-6 0r a small v-8 in it. a light little truck that would get good gas mileage and be fast. but keep the rev and speed limiters built into the computor. so you don't blow it up or kill yourself trying. but be responsive enough to impress people. and keep the base price under 10k$!

Yea I know.It was a sad day. However, ford is doing that with the newer ones. The F250 cab is the same as the F750 again.
Getting deep in here. The 4.0 for 1996 is rated at a lot less than the current Ranger, and it doesn't get even close to 5 seconds... not by a long shot. The 1996 4.0 Ranger is closer 8 to 11 seconds depending on gearing, 4x4, etc. That's a lot of car lengths by the time you get to 60. Some of the Rangers with 5.0L V8 conversions are in the low to mid 5 second range. Some 5.0 Rangers even get in the high 4s, but usually with some help from the bottle, or they are otherwise highly modified. The last model year Lighting (2004) in stock form was good for 5.1 seconds.

I'm really not wanting to get into a pissing match but its a disservice to other Ford truck owners if I see something which is contrary to all my experience, all published specifications, the experience I've seen of countless of others, and then say nothing about it. I have an extremely hard time believing that a basically stock 4.0 is going to be a match Ford a Lightning, Dodge SRT10, Mustang GT, etc. 0-60. An ignition and intake restricter certainly aren't going to help it acheive that. If that were the case people would be lining up to buy Rangers with 4.0s, not Mustangs, Lightnings, Corvettes, etc. I've driven plenty of 4.0s, and the later years (mid-2000s) are a lot faster than the 90s models, and pretty darn quick for a truck, but not any where near as fast as a Lightning.
Maybe your truck is an exception and is the fastest 4.0 out of the millions made. Do you have a video or timeslip as proof? What's the axle ratio on the truck?

I have several service manuals from those years as well showing them as C-series.

Yea that site was wrong.Wikipedia and HowStuffWorks both list it as C-Series.It had a long life.It lasted from the 50's til about 84 with only a few minor cosmetic changes.
i just thought it was pretty quick for a little pick up with a v-6 5spd. yes it suprised me to. i thought it would be much slower than that, like you said 8 or 10. i don't know if its the way its built or what! or the way its geared or if it was reprogammed. we bought it used, in 98. i just thought it was odd. sorry! and i don't mean any disservice to anyone.
and your right! for what i think is stock or darn near it. maybe alittle more than meets the eye.
and i to have a book case full of manuals on cars and trucks that i have worked on.
my wife drives the truck daily, and all i'm saying, is i'm proud of my truck and i maintain it myself and i'm a mechanic. by trade! i'm a ford owner and i like my truck!
