Ignition timing

Does anyone know where the timing should run on a '08 V10?

I just got a Scan Gauge and watching the timing is kind of interesting. With the cruise set on 70 mph it will run from 28 to 40 degrees. Mostly 29-32. A small hill or more wind that requires more throttle and the timing pulls back. The only time it will go above 32 is when only very light throttle is needed to hold speed.

Is it normal for it to pull back like that? I'm using premium fuel, so it shouldn't be sensing knock. Is this range what should be expected?

That's where the low-end torque comes from, retarding the timing like that.

I did the same thing, with a 390 I built with 11:1 compression and lopey cam, very prone to pinging.

I reversed the standard vacuum advance to actually retard the timing when I apply the go-pedal. It worked out great, getting lots more low-end torque than I could have any other way.

Normal, I'd think.

If that's true it should be retarding alot more. On Sat I got the wiring done for the trailer and hooked up the 5er for a shake down cruise. The only place I could run OD was on a slight downhill. On the level with no wind at all, maybe.

The other thing I didn't like with the 5er was the downshifts. It is kind of a double shift or a stutter. Fairly harsh.

I hope I don't sound like I'm complainig. I want to learn what is out there to improve things. Thanks for the responses.

You were you using tow/haul mode right?

Yes, using tow/haul. I think that the shift is slow/harsh because of the system thrying to make it smoother by pulling power for the shift. It didn't matter if I used just enough throttle to force the shift or pushed hard on the right pedal. Shift felt the same.
