the "CLU - CLUNK!" sound.

98 3.0 makes a clu - clunk sound when shifting from P to D. Then when I step on the gas pedal I get what seems like a delay, or hesitation kinda. To me... it seems as though it is some where in the drive train, behind the trannie, maybe where the drive shaft connects to the Gear box?

It's hard to explain... feels almost like the rear differential/axel/wheel assembly are trying to "catch up" with the drive shaft. there is a definate delay and clunk sound when i depress the pedal with normal to slow preasure. (I'm affraid to 'gun it' for fear I'd just make thing worse!)

Any one want to diagnose this one?.....How long do I got Doc? (now for the scariest question of them all) HOW MUCH $$$ ?

ATF you mean? the level there is up to par, definately.

Check your rear spring shackle mounts, they are probably gone. Mine are, even though there is no rust elsewhere. This is an all too common problem with older Rangers.

U joints you say? there is more than one? how many are there? costly?
I'd like to think this is something I can repair myself. anyone done the universal joints before?

as to how many ujoints it depends, 2wd or 4wd and if you have a single or double cardigan joint. if you have then single card. joint and 2wd it should be 3 ujoints if it is the double card. then you will have 4 this is assuming a 2wd. if it is 4wd then there will be at least a couple prolly more in the front shaft too. although those will not have any impact on the park to drive shift unless you use 4wd all the time and then there are other problems you will cause. if you are gonna do the ujoints yourself then hope for the single card.s they are much easier to work on than the doubles
cost is not too bad. just did the ujoints on my truck (2wd single card. 91 ranger) all 3 of mine ( the greaseable type) came out to around $30

the truck is 4-WD I don't know the difference between single or double cardigan. but if it helps it a 98 3.0 4-WD supercab "off road" package.

it might be u joints but try wiping all the old grease off the slip yoke and putting new on, its a common problem with the rangers... and this only takes a few min and some regular grease

slip yoke.... i called "Townsend Ford" (a local dealer) the quoted me $68.95 for a new slip yoke. Think getting a new one is the way to go? How about after market? Is replaceing the slip yoke difficult and will it take all day long???

There is also the slip yoke boot. Does that or should that be replaced at the same time?

NNOOOooooooo....it is a simple maintenance task. Read the TSB in the reply I provided. You should purchase from the dealer the special grease mentioned in the TSB.
