Deal with ultra low sulpher diesel?

I need to know a bit about purple diesel and the effects on these engines. The dealer stressed that I must use low sulpher diesel, anything else will void the warranty. Is purple (farm fuel) low sulpher? What does non-low sulpher do to the engine and is it long term? In a pinch can I run non-low and clean it out later?

If you have a 6.4 diesel you need to use ULSDF, maximum 15 ppm sulfur.

A lot of service stations will only offer LSDF, maximum 500 ppm sulfur. This will mess up your engine and void your warranty.

The died red, off road diesel is possibly the worst thing you could do to your engine. Depending on what level of sulfur fuel is died. You can investigate that further.

Interesting comment, I read in today's paper. Here in GA, the GOVERNOR declared a month long holiday on no sales tax on off road diesel. BUT my real point is, in today's market place, there really isn't much savings to buy the off road diesel as the dealers must add sales tax back to the price of the diesel fuel. So if you save say $0.35/gallon on $4.50/ gallon diesel, by the time you buy the red off road, pay the sales tax, almost the same as ULSDF.

The only thing you can count on the dye telling you is that road tax has not been paid on the fuel.
As a tax exempt organization we legally use about 100 gallons per day of dyed diesel fuel, its all ULSD and is all that is available in my area.

Sleepy Guy, I see you are in Canada. I am not sure what the dyed fuel rules are up there. You should check with your fuel distributor as to what sulfer level your dyed fuel is.

I'm doing my part to reduce food imports, control rising food costs and help feed the children, my trucks run on 100% petroleum diesel. What are you doing?

All rules aside. To me it is an issue of usability rather then cost. And yes I am in Canada. Purple is rated for farms and commercial use. I think it is banned on highways and know that it is lower octain but not sure the exact details. It is used on Rigs and well my truck spends allot of time on rigs. I was advised to use an additive to the fuel on top of the ULSD. Do you know what damage is done by not using ultra low?

If your truck has a particulate filter in the exhaust, using fuel with a higher sulfer level than 15ppm will lead to quicker clogging and degradation of the DPF resulting in more frequent regenerations and higher operating costs. Also warranty coverage will be effected.

Likely not going to hurt the motor itself, but like orig said it will bung up the dpf quicker, around here if you have a farm sticker on your plate you can run purple gas on the highways no problem, its just gettin the farm stickers that is a bit tricky. Since you are on the rigs I'm guessin up north in alberta right? I live just outside of Calgary and thats how it works down here.

Most of Macon, GA, aka, Bibb County, Monroe County to name only two on maybe two hundred counties in GA. Even Majors like Sunoco still has LSDF.

I am not going to post further or steal someone's thread, but beware of this, they find red in your tank, in the deal old USA, be prepared or say good bye to your truck and you will be liened by the FED.

To the guy above, about the damage, from what I read, put some sugar in your tank, and some high sulfur fuel, and you can make it blow up, but it will not be covered by warranty, as I understand what FORD says.

Here is my point. Why buy an engine. A diesel engine. Expect a big company to stand behind you. And then violatate what they tell you to do? I don't understand how people think!

This forum is generally Canadian friendly...not sure what that was about above. As for ULSD use, the answer is that you must use ULSD or risk damage to the emissions equipment installed on your truck. That equipment is expensive to replace or remove...illegal to remove here and there I am sure. As was stated above, check with your fuel supplier and make sure you are getting ULSD for use in the 6.4 or you will most likely have problems.

preppypro & sleepyguy:

Profound, your post is NOT! I answered to a post, and was referred to a Canadian post which seems to me to be identical to rules in the USA. The guy was saying he is going to burn off road which probably has in excess of 500 ppm sulfur and expects to use an additive to clean it up.

Sir, that to me is the ASS. How many of us use LATIN in our posts? I didn't, but for you, with your comment to me:

Ira furor brevis est!

Put a couple $$ signs on that.
