1995 5.8 oil capacity

I just purchased a 1995 F150 4x4 with a 5.8L motor. The owners guide says 6 qts. with filter. So,without question, I change the filter and put in 6qts.,start the truck, check for leaks, and then shut it off. When I checked the dipstick it read about 1 qt. over full. Her is my question,do you put in 6qts. or go by the dipstick and put in 5.25qts. to put it right on full? Thanks in advance for any input.

John, when I change my oil in my 93, I always put the 6 qrts in, and it reads overfilled. you might try to put the 5.25 in and drive it a day and check it when the engine is cold again. Ill bet you need to fill the remainder in at that time!!!!

I believe the 4 wheel drive's all use 6 quarts. Go by the owner's manual. The filter holds a good part of a quart... and it's gotta fill up. Make sure it's on absolutly level ground. My F250 w/ 460 will read incorrectly if it's not perfecly level.

I have a '95 F150 4X4 Xl 5.8. I got it back from shop and it was way overfill. I am taking it back to have them drain some off. Am I making a mistake? I have driven it
about 40 mi. since oil change and it's still way over. Will this condition blow any seals? Should I leave it alone?

Too much oil will allow the crank to hit it, which not only wastes energy, but it can whip air into the oil, which makes it less effective at lubrication.

You are right, I see it has happened to several others. I will only add 5 qts. and the run engine, check dipstick and add accordingly
, Thanks
