well with my experience with my 06 2wd, CC, SB, 250 with the 5.4 and auto I only got 14.3 mpg on trips and that was the best ever. My usual was 13.8-14.2 average. The V10 gets about 11-12mpg but, with alot more torque and horsepower. My new 08 F150 CC, 4wd, 6.5 bed, 4.6 auto, 3.73 LS rear, I just got 16.38 and that was with less than 700 miles on the odometer.

if you are going to tow 7-10K pounds go get the v10 the difference will be night and day with that much weight.

Actually, the original poster said that he wanted a crew cab with a 6.5' box and be able to pull up to 10,000 lbs.
Therefore he has to go to an F250.
If he wanted an F150 he'd have to buy an F150 with the Heavy Duty package and they only come with 8' boxes and regular or super cabs.

FYI- I have a 2006 F150HD 4x4 SC and consistently get 15-18 MPG Imperial gallons, or about 12-15 MPG US gallons.

One of the SD's we have is an 06 F350 w/5.4. I get the exact same mileage out of a tank as i do with the F150.(approx 500km) Granted the truck is a reg cab 8ft box, I bet it weighs close to my fully loaded lariat.

I went from a 00 250 Crewcab longbox with a V10 and I miss that pickup so bad but it loved gas and would not fit in a garage. So I have my 150 which I like very much but it is not nearly as big and comfy. As far as a 250 with a 5.4 everyone I know with that engine gets worse mileage then the V10 just because it works so hard no hills around here just wind. I loved my V10 for pulling from car trailers to a 28 foot enclosed loaded to the gills when I moved it just handled everything so well. If it was not for gas prices I would still have my 250 that is for sure.

Agree with everyone. For your application, it'd be better to get a 250 6.8L than the 150 or 250 5.4L.

Now I couldn't tell you about mpgs in SD's when equipped with a 5.4L or 6.8L, but would think they'd get similar mileage. Being the 6.8L moves the truck with ease but is thirstier while the 5.4L is less thirsty but works harder to move the weight.

The 250 may have a rougher ride and thirstier for your DD, but if you're pulling anything over 7-9K with a 1/2 ton then you should upgrade. I wouldn't trust any 1/2 ton with over 8-9K lbs, no matter if the rating states 10-11K.

If it was me, I'd choose the F250 6.8L. Maybe a little rougher ride and drinks more, but will allow for any upgrading you make in weight and will control the weight a lot better. The 5.4L would be too gutless in an SD pulling this weight through the CO mtns.

I just have to chime in here. I had the 04 fx4 w/5.4 auto I used to pull my 32' camper 7200lbs empty. It did very well everywhere I just traded it 2 weeks ago on my new 08 super duty w/5.4 6 speed manual and 410 rear I pulled the same camper same mountains in Pa. and I was impressed over the 150 I guess with the stick and 410 this truck just monstered on the hills had no problem anywhere plenty of snot actually was thinking of moving up to a 5th wheel now. I got 10 mpg pulling the trailer loaded. now this truck only has 550 miles on it so far. I do notice that it is a little sluggish until you get the rpms up to 2500 or so. then it kicks but nicely. Ive had the other big trucks as well had a GMC crew with 454 stick, ford 350 7.3 idi diesel, comparing this new 250 with the 5.4 yeah it doesnt have the guts the big block did. but when im not towing its not gonna kill me on fuel. heck being new it is already getting 13-14 if I keep my foot out of it. as far as the v-10 I cant say only know my buddies truck sits an awful lot in his driveway.
