I have an 86 f150 with a 302efi. Just recently it has aquired an engine problem. Sometimes it will have a higher than normal idle and sometimes it fights to stay running. It does this also when im drivin down the road and slowin down or stopping. I have also noticed that during this whole time, the relays behind that box lookin thing behind the battery on the passenger side are clickin like crazy. i think i have narrowed it down to the one the farthest on the passenger side. I have unplugged all 4 of them individually and havnt noticed a change at all one way or another. I have talked to a shop and they told me it could be the pump in the tank, I dont see what that would have to do with the relays by the battery clickin. I am confused as fu*k on this one. I really need everyones help here.
With a efi problem. always pull the codes first. They may not lead you to a solution every time, but sometimes a code will come up, and it will fix the problem right away.
Go to fordfuelinjection.com. They have specific step by step instructions on how to pull codes. Just because the light isn't on doesn't mean there isn't a code stored.
The 1980 to 1986 trucks do not have a check engine light to begin with. To see if you have trouble codes, or not, you have to run a diagnostc on these trucks.
1984-1986 trucks have an emission light, that is on a timer. It is NOT even hooked up to the computer. This light only lights after 70,000 or so miles to tell you to test the computer to check for codes. The emission light is basicly useless.
So your sayin that by runnin a self test on the EEC isnt goin to help? If i run my test for the EEC what light would i look at if there is not check engine light? Should i just use my test light i made n hook it up to the EEC out and use that as my engine light?

It will definately help. You will either get a diagnostic code to help you fix the engine, or you will get a Code 11, which means the system passes, Doing the test is the only way to find out if you have a problem with the EEC or not.

There isn't one on the truck unfortunately. You will have to plug something into it to read the code output.

You can do that, or you can buy the Ford code reader from one of the auto part stores, or you can use a multimeter and count the sweeps off the indicator.
I used a test light i made. i got code 11 for the first set so its all good, than for the continuous memory i got 22 and 53. i ordered a map sensor and throttle sensor n they will b in tomorrow. Ill disconnect the battery while im changin em to reset the computer so we will see how she works out.
I have to admit im gettin tired of puttin money into it but i will never get my money back out of it thats for sure so i keep puttin more in. i have over 5 grand in the truck with all new parts.
I didn't start the motor but i had it turned forward all the way. I will run that test after i put the new parts on tomorrow and clear the computer. After i reset the computer, how long would it take before it has a chance to read a code, if there is one?
