Turbo scream

I have a 10,000# camper that I tow regulary. When going up a hill or under heavy acceleration and at full boost it sounds like the turbo is going to blow apart! It gets a high pitch scream, not like a typical turbo whine but like bearings grinding together with no grease. As soon is let off the gas and the boost drops just a hair it goes away. My truck is a 08 job#1 350 SW. Has anyone noticed this? Just added BANKS DPF back exhaust scared to do DPF delete at this point. Ordered Job #2 air damn see if that helps MPG.
Love the truck. I had a 2003 6.0 blew up turbo first time towing camper with three young kids and mad wife, had to get rid of it!

Welcome to

Do you have any other mods on the truck? Does it only do it when your towing? Describe the scream a little more.

Where is the boost gage needle when this happens?

No other mods, just DPF back Banks dual exhaust (it made that noise before exhaust). Just when towing heavy load with RPM'S fairly high, boost gauge is around 32# pounds or so. The sound is like when a bearing is going bad, its not just one tone but a grinding multiple high pitch whine.
I feel that that commercial :"my car goes clunk can you help"
Thanks for any info you may have.

Why would it only happen under heavy load? Without pulling trailer and mashing the gas no noise.

I bet it is the fan kicking in under load.

Noise comes directly from behind firewall.

hey its got a the 100k warranty drive it and see what happens might get worse.... might get better.... likely worse..... but i would wait and see OR have it looked at and if they say it needs a turbo, drive it till they get one in..... i would hook on the camper and have a mechanic hop in...

Check all 4 of the charge air cooler connections at the intercooler and intake manifold. If you see oil leaking from any of these connections thats a sign of air leak from the boot. This is why you only hear the sound under full boost situations like towing.

Blue, not sure if you are aware of the heater core whine that some Job 1 trucks experience under acceleration. I had this on my 350 and it sounds like a turbo problem. The sound seems to come from directly behind the firewall as you noted as well. The sound is actually the coolant/water rushing through the hose behind the center stack.
This may be the issue if it turns out that your turbo is ok.

My 08 F-450 had a loud turbo noise at high boost. I happened to have a camcorder and played it at he dealer when I took it in. He had to investigate a few days to get to the root cause. I recall it was something to do with a fuel cooler pump that had to be purged, the noise was caused by air in the system. Anyway the turbo was OK and the noise is gone.

Same noise on my truck and it was that heater core. Sounds nasty and only at high RPM with a big load on. I would have them check that 1st.
