If you find a 6.0 you like, get an oasis report on it, generally if they are clean then you'll have yourself a very good truck. I've had 3 problem free years with my early 2003 6.0 that I bought with 120k km's on it in 2005, I'm at 200k km's now and I've loved every minute of owning the truck. If you plan on playing you'll be breaking stuff with whatever truck you buy.
just about any 7.3 will treat you well (would still get an oasis), generally stay away from the 03 & 04 6.0s. some say 05, too, but they were much better. 06 and 07 you should be fine. just get an oasis on anything you look at.

The early (95' - 96') 7.3s had some problems with drive belt pulleys not being lined up right. They would from time to time wined the belt off the pulley on decel.
The 05, 06 and 07 6.0s are good I think. Wife had an 05 that we put 105000 miles on before it was totalled.

I might have switched this around but didn't the later 7.3s use weaker rods that only really worked if you kept hp/tq close to stock? I do know for sure though the auto is one of the weaker points of the 7.3 unless it's been rebuilt right.
As to the 6.0s, 06 and 07 you should be good to go. 05s from what I've read(only from what I have read) seem to be pretty hit or miss. No matter what get an oasis on it to know for sure what problems were reported(and hopefully treated) to Ford.
I think you are right. I just remember my 96 throwing the belt off when I got off the throttle about 10 times. Twice it tore the trans cooler lines off the truck. They fixed it with a recall.

that's good enough reason to just stay away from autos in general...
Shoot no, the torqshift is lightyears ahead of the old tranny that you 7.3 guys had. All the stuff that I've got on my truck and my tranny still shifts wonderful.

The weaker rods (PMR-powered metal rods) are good to about 400 hp. the auto is a weaker point yes but they usally get about 100,000 on a stock truck. those seem to be hit or miss also. The reason the 7.3 is thought so highly of is that its a realiable engine, when you mod any egine for more HP you raise the risk of blowing something no matter what kind of engine it is. A solid built 4r100 is pretty much bullet proof though. If your not looking for big HP then a 7.3 would be a good choice.
The early 99's and some 2000 have the forged rods FYI so if you find one of those you can get some big power out of it and still have a reliable engine.

I found a 04 F-250 6.0 PS super cab short bed 4x4, lariet, 59,000. Its at dealer that repoed it it sat for a year while the banks/credit union settled stuff out. Clean title from CARFAX and only wants 17900.00. Why so cheap and what should I look for? Ive had several trucks but no diesels.
Get the VIN and post it in the OASIS Request thread at the top of the 6.0 Forum. That will tell you what Ford Dealer Service has done to the entire truck.
Since it sat that long I would be concerned about the turbo actuator ring and vanes being 'sticky'. Auto transmissions don't set too well either! All the fluids and filters should be changed, the OASIS will tell you if they've done that yet.
If the OASIS checks out OK then get warranty info and commitment from the Dealer... in writing.
BTW, if you're not going to tow then you may want to consider a gasoline engine.

hehe, i know the torqshift is a heckuva lot better, i'm just not an auto fan in the 1st place nor a 7.3 guy (hoping to be both before too much more time goes by...).
