Question Wiring Harness Recommendations

Hello all,

I recently replaced the turn signal switch on my 1970 F100 Ranger XLT 360 T-18 (4sp) and did not particularly care for the condition of the wires under the dash. Having read in other posts about the mickey mouse wiring that Ford put in these trucks I'm considering a whole new harness with more substantial wires.

The only thing that isn't stock on this truck is the radio / 6CD changer that the previous goofball installed. I'm also considering power windows but only if the switches can be hidden. (of course I've been considering that for about 5 years now)

Any advice on the advisability of this and what brand would work best on my truck would be appreciated.

Thanks

Painless is good if you like to spend money.
I'm installing a Summit universal harness in my wife's Jeep, and I like the quality so far. You need to re-use a few plugs, but you can change out the pins in those if that's a concern.

I am in the same boat---and have a 1971 sport custom with 302. The engine had a fire and burnt the wires, etc. I heard that ezwires are cheaper and marked every 5''. I am no electrician, but need to do this soon, also. Anyone ever bought 1 of these kits? thanks

I installed a ez universal wiring harness in my truck. I used the mini fuse harness. I would recomend this harness. It was color coded and labeled every 6 inches. I only have a basic understanding of electricity and was able to rewire the truck in a day. The wiring is very clean now. I was even able to rout the wires so a minimal amount of wiring is visible in the engine compartment.

In a day? Wow - great job! I bought the EZ kit about a month ago and I keep putting it off because I'm scared it's going to turn into a week long (or longer) job. Did you re-use all of the plugs under the dash to the gauges and such?

Thanks!

I did re-use all the plugs. Its funny how they say its universal and then put gm plugs on it. Before I installed it I planed out very carefully how I was going to rout every thing. Follow the directions carefully. Also it would help to have wiring diagrams for your truck. The colors dont always match what the manual says their supose to be.

So if I ordered the ezwire kit--would you suggest the universal kit with mini fuses for me also? I am a real bad electrician, but need to do this too.. I have been putting it off and really need to bite the bullet. Bill

If you decide to go with the ez wiring kit I dont think it would mater if you got the mini fuses or the standard blade fuses. It should be about the same either way. I would recomend the color coded one. I like the mini fuses becuase of how small the fuse blocks are. I ordered the 20 circut harnes so I had wiring run for power windows, locks, fuel pump, fan, and all the other goodies i might want to add. And it was no bigger than the original fuse block. However if your not planning on all that i would say get the 12 circut becuase its smaller and less wires to run. I would not be to worried if I was you. If I can do it Im sure any of you guys can do it. Just follow the directions and plan ahead. When you get the harness in the mail pull out the directions the day before you start and read through them carefully. I had a good idea before i started on how and where everything was going. The onlything that gave me trouble was the ignition switch and the colomn. This was becuase the wires on my truck colomn where not the same color as the directions said they would be. If you have wiring diagrams for your truck this wont be a problem. Other than that the directions are very good.

Painless my A@#

WOW! $615 for Painless w/switches. Is that worth it? Is the product that much better that we should pay that kind of money?

I have used both, the painless kit and ez kit. Both are comparable, Just take your time and it also helps to have an original wiring diagram for reference. I used the ez kit in my 70 f 100, the part that took me the longest was wiring up the turn signals.

This had been asked before and alot of people had liked the Centech wire harness. I believe it comes with the right plug ends. Centech Online Wiring and Automotive Accessories

let me ask you something about this kit so when you wire up the signals and the 4ways does it freeze when you hit the brakes as the old set up does or does it work as the newer 4 ways do today with this newer harness setup?
