i have an 86 E250 with the beastly 5.8L 351Windsor, can i simply drop a 5.0L 302 in without any motor mount fabrications? now to answer your question of why, i was told that i can get more torque out of the 302 then i can my 351 and not to mention it doesnt suck that much gas. one more question will the 302 be able to handle my 35in tires?
do you recomend doing something like that or should i stick with the 351? Is there anything out there better that would bolt in? if i were to make it fuel inj how would that be with emmisions because im required to have a smog pump
I think the 351 would be better than the 302. A 351 is just a 302 with more stroke, which means more torque. There is no larger stock engine that will bolt in. You can buy aftermarket engines based on the 302/351 that make a lot more power. They will bolt in.
I have no idea what the emission laws are where you live. Where I live there's no inspections or emission testing, so we can do what we want.

i appreciate your help, i have one more question are there better trannys that will bolt in to improve torque? to be totally honest im not even sure what it has in it now its the stock tranny though.
An E250 with a 5.8 is likely a C6 (3 speed). Besides, transmissions don't make torque. If you want more torque at the wheels, you need to install a shorter final drive gear.
Mark is correct regarding the 5.8/5.0. The 5.8 is just a long stroke 5.0. Longer stroke and larger displacement will always make more torque. The 5.0 may get slightly better gas mileage, but not with 35" tires.
The 35" tires are probably why you don't feel like you have much torque. Compared to 35" tires (110 inch circumference), a set of stock LT235/70R16 tires are 91 inch circumference. That's 20% more, which means you'd need to change the rear gears from 3.00:1 to 3.61:1 to get the same 'seat of the pants' torque.
Your rear differential will have a steel tag on it that tells you what ratio the stock gears are. Consider changing rear gears to a 3.73 or 4.11, and you save big money over a new engine and have more fun driving. It might cost you a bit more in gas, but mostly 'cause you'll have your foot in it more.
