97 F350 Concern

Hi there ,

I started to notice yesterday that when I shift from drive to reverse or reverse to drive the trans would make a loud clunk ,,though other times it would go in with no noise. I looked underneath and found some transmission fluid from the drive shaft to the extension housing ( I think that is correct ? ) As i spin the shaft I can see som fluid around the gasket ...any info on what needs to be done woudl be great !

Thanks in advacne ,

Bob B

Rear main seal replacement would require r & r of the trans. A major fubar in the reinstall would be more than a clunk. Your rear trans seal is leaking, possibly the result of just age or some other issue. You got a trusted auto trans shop available? The rear seal on the trans is pretty easy, they can check other stuff at the same time.

sounds like a bad u-joint. If it is a bad u-joint, it's probably also what tore the extension housing seal.

Thanks for the response....I'm feeling the same on this ! my guess is the way it the transmission was put or back or the drive shaft was installed as it had no issues prior . Thanks again .
