1991 Explorer, 1992 Tanny

I just got my hands on a mint 1991 4.0L Explorer. The engine, body and interior are all in great shape the only problem is the tranny is shot. I can get a tranny out of a 1992 Explorer 4.0l that has a lot of body damage. So I'm wondering will the tranny out of the 92 fit into my 91.

Thanks for your help

Auto or manual? I have a 91 and the trans going out and the interchance manual at the yard said a 90-96 5sp is all the same. Hope this helps

The answer is yes. The transmission from a 4.0L Ranger or Aerostar will also work. However, it is better to rebuilt your tranny that to get an unknown and install it. A lot of the ones in the yards are already dead or dying.

Regardless of what you decide to do, don't use the factory cooler. Install a new one. When a tranny dies it can leave all kinds of various crap in the cooler which can get loose and destroy your new one.

My cousin's car died a while back and his dad (my uncle) was going to put a new tranny in it. I told him not to use the factory cooler but he didn't listen and the new tranny was dead soon after.

Well the factroy cooler does not trap much if anything. It is just a large tube that makes an s through a fin type heat sink. If you flush it out, it gets flushed out. Nothing gets trapped. I do agree that the factory cooler is inadequate, but I think your brothers problems are typical of a bad rebuild. Any gunk in the cooler gets caught by the filter in the transmission, so it is extremely unlikely that it damaged your cousins trans. I prefer to rebuilt the old tranny than to get an off the shelf rebuild. You have no idea why the rebuilt tranny failed, or if the cause of its original failure was corrected. Whereas your trans can be diagnosed and repaired.
