Sounds like the cable is broken or disconnected. I through up some pics for you. If you have to change it, it is not too difficult a job.

Cluster removed: (I use a 1/4 nut driver to removed the 2 screws holding the indicator to the guage assembly:

This is the end that connects under the sterring column cover (only 1 screw to remove the column cover:

This is the back of the shift indicator:

Hope this helps. Sometimes the plastic tubing that the small wire runs through cracks up too.

The Cable is a serviceable unit, and you do not have to replace the entire indicator.

Not sure if ford still carries it or not.

Anyone know where to get this cable? I just had to replace the steering column for my 1985 F150, and the shift indicator cable tubing cracked in two places. Needless to say, it don't work any longer. I went to NPD, but their catalog doesn't list the cable.

Any leads on this part??

LMC have the complete shift indicators for C4/5/6 transmissions. The AOD version seems to have been dropped for pre-87 trucks.

Ford may have some NOS (new old stock) for that cable. Contact Member Numberdummy and he can check for you. Never hurt to check.

I've seen people makeshift their own cable and tubing before.

I wonder if the hard plastic emissions tubing that they sell at auto parts stores would work? It's a similar diameter, it's hollow inside (of course), and it's flexible.

I think I'll pick some up sometime and see if I can fix my old C6 indicator. I have an AOD one that doesn't work any better, since my tach cluster is out of an AOD truck.

Im currently trying to remove the cluster right now. Im stuck on how to get this cable to release. am i supposed to remove it from the rear of the cluster? or from the steering column. i just trying to trouble shoot the cluster not the cable itself.

It disconnects from the column (although I'm not sure how, I've never done it myself and have just cut the string in the JY).

Just did this today. Anyway, there is a small wire loop on the back of the collar on the steering column. Slip it off of the peg it's on, and use a 5/16 nut driver to remover the retainer bolt. It should be fairly obvious when you look at it with the column shroud off. Adjusting it is a bit trickier. There is a method in the Haynes manual on how to adjust it.

BTW: I scored one for an AOD truck, but I have a C6. Anyone want to trade? It has to work though.
