351W Block w/302 Heads

I am confused with a motor I have in a 1970 F100 Ranger. The code on the block above the starter reads (C90E-8015-G) and the stamp behind the manifold reads (9J22) which would indicate it was cast in September 1969. The heads are stamped (302) when you take the valve covers off. Is the block code not a code for a 1969 351W? If so, why does it have 302 heads on it? From what I can gather from previous owner, the engine is stock and was rebuilt a couple of years ago. The VIN is F10GCG71965. Can anyone help me with this? I am not real familiar with ford numbers and would like to clear this up some. Thanks for any help possible.

351W Block w/302 Heads

i'm no expert but I did'nt think a 351w was stock in that model year, so I'd say it is either not the stock engine or it is a 302.

Seems like you have a 351W from a '69 Torino/Fairlane. As far a the 302 on the heads, I would say somebody swapped them during rebuild. But that would have been a lot of work as the head bolts are of different size (bigger on the 351, smaller on the 302)... kinda makes ya scratch your head, don't it, specially since the 351 heads of that vintage are quite a bit better than the 302s. Can you find any other casting numbers on the heads? There should be some identifying the cast date of the heads.

351W Block w/302 Heads

Well here's my 2 cents worth! If it is a 351w motor, its not the factory motor. Ford did not start putting the 351w in trucks until 1980. The 302 was installed in trucks starting in the late 60's Sounds like someone installed a windsor and put the 302 heads on it. Like Bill stated it would be alot of trouble since the head bolt dia. is different between the two motors. Here's a quick way to tell the difference between a 302 & 351w. Measure the distance between the two front intake manifold bolts. The 302 is 7 1/4" from center of the 2 bolts & the 351w is 9 1/4". Another way is to remove the intake manifold, the cid is cast in the lifter valley Hope this info helped!!
