Just finished pulling head, must say the head gasket is better that the ones GM used. No obvious signs of burnt valve, some signs of blow by. I suppose that it doesn't take much. Exhaust valves have carbon built up on them but not anything to talk about. Think I will take the head into a machine shop and have it pressure checked to rule out any bad valves. Did International use brass valve guides or are they just cast into the head?

There might be a lot better information down the page a bit in the "pre power stroke" forum. The guys there know all about the older engines. They helped me out when I got my first diesel.
