Has anybody put an aftermarket tranny cooler on their X and bypassed the stock cooler? Is it a good upgrade? I have no problem with temps but I thought it might be a good upgrade as long as it was big enough with its own fan.
It's my understanding that the stock 6.0 tranny cooler is the biggest/best there is. Never heard of someone replacing it.
Could be wrong though.

+1....
the stock 6.0l tranny cooler is very hard to beat...

I have noticed that the tranny temps come up to operating temp very quickly. In my oldchevy suburban I had a 14 pass 28,000 lb cooler w/fan and the tranny never got hot and stayed very close to 180 degrees. I don't know much about the 6.0 setup yet, but I am learning. I do not want to hurt the engine , especially with the problems it already has built into it, ie, head gasket, turbo, cooler.
Ian, do you have an aftermarket gauge or the Ford Idiot gauge?

No, fluid fine. Just never saw the tranny temp come up so quickly before. The X only has 47K on it and no problems. Just trying to play devils advocate and worry before something does go wrong. I am a little paranoid since I also have the 6.0 in her. I keep hearing war stories about the engine and thought it might run over to the tranny. I am glad it doesn't. Thanx for the help!
I still think you are worrying about nothing. When you have the aftermarket gauge we can speculate a little better.

The only thing I don't like about the X tranny cooler is that it is sandwiched between the AC condenser and the IC. My Suburban 6.5L TD had both the engine oil and tranny coolers out front of the AC condenser. Just seems to make more sense. I had 200,000+ miles on the Suburban with synthetic tranny fluid in it and never touched the tranny.
Also, thinking about adding another 10,000 lbs tranny cooler to the X. I'll mount it out in front of the AC condenser and break the lines at the location where I change the tranny fluid.
I have a 10,000 lbs cooler on my T-Bird SC installed after the fluid goes through the radiator. My tranny temp gauge rarely goes above 140°F and that is only on a real hot day. Normally runs about 140°F or less in the summer and does not move in the winter.

With the F5 chip in stock mode and BTS trans with the 6.0 Cooler (no deep pan or anything else) I am making about 55 above ambient in summer

Here's something to watch out for. The 6.0L has 1/2 inch cooler lines. Don't install a cooler with smaller lines, it will be too restrictive. If there is restriction the rear of the trans won't get enough lube flow and you'll destroy it. Also, if there is restriction you'll end up with LESS cooling with the extra cooler.
I don't think there is hardware on the market that can improve the cooling on a 6.0L truck. My recommedation is to leave it stock.

Maybe YOU can tell us this since you were in the inside. Why did the 7.3s get those wimpy coolers while the V10 got better coolers and the 6.0, got the best of all? I've always wanted to know what made the V10 get a larger cooler? Why did they go gonzo with the 6.0?
