Howdy, me and my 97' 250 are running alot in the dark lately. The deer are also beginning to inhabit the road more frequently than before. I am out driving my head lights right now and would like some super bright ones so i can see the little guys better. Any experience on good ones? Thanks guys
Relay harnesses are a good idea, Painless wiring makes a 9004/9007 that is nearly bullet proof. I had one on my last truck, well worth the $100. For bulbs, there are a lot of choices, I used to get high watt bulbs from Lux in So. FL, they offered 45/65,55/100 and 80/100 watt bulbs, stock is usually right around 45/65. However, I tried Piaa's Superwhites and they are far superior to the other bulbs I've used. They don't washout on fresh black top nearly as much, they produce the same light as the high powers without the extra power draw. Worth doing in my opinion.
Because the truck is 11 years old, your lenses are probably in bad shape. You may want to try a polishing kit too.
You dealing with the gases in the bulbs when your talking about halogen and xeon, which is a slight mistake. All headlight bulbs contain halogen, some have different combinations of Xeon and other gases which change the color or color temperature (Kelvin)
The color temperature can make the light appear brighter, but the lumen output might be the same, I get shaky on that. The two things to watch is the Kelvin and wattage. Higher for both is brighter on the road, but they can get temperamental with power requirements. Some high power bulbs, particularly with the superwhites can't tolerate any voltage spikes, which is why a relay harness that powers the bulbs from directly from the battery is helpful.
I would not suggest the cool blue lights from local auto part stores. I have clear headlights (lenses that is) Bought them when I first got the truck along with a set of cool blues to go in the head and fog lights. 2 months later the fog lights burned out. And a headlight since then also. I ended up going and buying some moore that were more white then blue. Silverstar I believe. From Advance Auto. There not to god awful expensive which is what I was watching the last time around. But they work well with the clear Lense
Not all bulbs are made equal. The Lux blues I used to run were very nice, but the police weren't fond of them, they were very blue. They ran for several years before I tried the cheap superwhites. Even my cheap super whites last quite a while, but I was using a relay harness, the big problem with the whites is to obtain the color they are burning the filaments very hot and become very voltage sensitive, slight spikes will destroy them.
