He lost vacuum to his brakes. I traced the line and it is loose from the intake. The problem is I can't get my hand on it. Where does it go? How does it install? Is there an easy way to access it?
It's a SOB to get at. Someone just posted a few days ago about this, and they ended up taking it to the dealer, something about having to remove the intake manifold or something painful like that.
A buddy of mine had his do the same thing, on an 06. He pulled the intake to get it back on, then clamped it so it will never come off, added a tee so he could disconnect it if needed and rerouted the thing. He says it was a major PITA.
Well I got it on without removing the intake. I did not put a clamp on it but it needs one. I will work on it more latter but for now it is up and running.
The problem is that every once in a while the truck does not start right away. Being used to the truck starting with a tap on the key means it does not make a full revolution and the motor sort of sneezes. Since this line is designed to function under vacuum Ford did not prepare for a possible pressure situation.
I removed the air filter box and the throttle body just to give me room. I did not remove the fuel injector rail. I did flex the fuel line forward so I could get my hand back there. I also disconnected the T fitting and the rest of the vacuum line from the brake booster to make the line easier to maneuver.
I looked at the line and nipple with a mirror and then did the work by Braille knowing in my head how it had to go back on. Once I got the line on the nipple it slid on very easily; too easily. This was not comfortable as you have to lie on top of the engine.
I am going to use some aircraft grade wax string that is used to secure wires on aircraft, to secure the vacuum line. I will tie onto the line where the elbow is and run the string forward under the intake and tie it off somewhere accessible. This should keep the line from blowing off in the future. The string will not cut into the intake or line and should last for 20-30 years.
