glasspacks or resonator tips?

I am going to cut the cat off my truck and run dual exhaust. I have narrowed it down to glasspacks and dumping before rear axle or just running straight pipe with resonator tips and again ending before rear axle.

From what I understand they work the same. I would like you opinions on this and if you could point me in the direction of some exhaust clips of running straight pipe with resonator tips so I can compare that to just running glasspacks.

I am looking for a deep grumble when just idleing around or cruising but at wide open i want it to scream.

Thanks again guys.

i dont know what ride or year you vehicle is but why not just go with duals with out any mufflers.

since you are already cutting the cat off you'll be breaking any emission laws (depending on area and vehicle/year) so why even have a muffler.

just go with the great sounds of straight pipes.

Sry about that. Its an 86 f150. Ya I am going with dual straight pipes. 2.25 in size. As far as emissions, the only that i know of besides the cat would be the o2 sensor on the manifold. Pollution pump is gone. Its a fuel infected 302, first year injection was put in.

Runnin straight pipes will generate the popping that the glasspacks do but my question is this, what affect will resonator tips have on straight pipe?

i really dont know about the effect the tips will have, i would think they would be really close to a glasspacks style of flow. i think it will still pop but im not postive about that though.

i know heartthrob has a exhaust system of of where the tips are the only system of muffler on them and i hear they are loud. no word how they are with the popping. $220-$270 for a DIY kit from jcwhitney

they have a couple exhaust clips of them (not a 302 but they could give you an idea of how it will sound).

Tampering with emissions equipment is a federal law, not local or state.

Straight pipes are way loud, and may attract more attention than one would really want. Personal opinion is the sound is more irritating than anything, especially on long drives.

Popping is not caused by the muffler, it is caused by an excess of unburned gas in the exhaust system from an overrich condition. jd

I have never heard of worrying about emissions tests or anything round here. I live out in the country and the places i normally go are just to a small city and a larger one here but cops are never really a problem. Most the cops round this area are hicks to begin with so they wont do anything bout loud exhaust cus they have em on there trucks too. As for the heartthrob system, hell i kan cut my pipes off n go down to the mufflers shop n get 2 7 foot sections of pipe and a 90 degree bend n thats all i need.

I agree completely with jimdandy.

Loud does not = sounds good. Im glad I live in a quiet neighborhood.

Resonator tips, unless they are pretty long will do next to nothing (good) to the exhaust sound. They are basically really short glasspacks. The problem is having a muffler at the very end of the exhaust system will bring out all the harshness and bad sounds that are normally mellowed out by putting pipe after the muffler. And by bad sounds, I mean yeah it will probably pop.

i was mainly listed the heartthrob as a way to hear some exhaust clips.

plus with a 1986 you'll probably get very little attention from law enforcement. now if it was a 1996 or 2006 then i think the EPA laws will carry around but with the age of the truck the cops will have to be pretty strict to write you up.
