C6 Tail Piece.. 2WD vs. 4WD

I'm swapping C6 transmissions in my '75 F250 4x4. I have found a cheap, usable C6 tranny, but it is out of a '79 F250 2WD. Obviously, the tail pieces are different on the 2WD vs. 4WD transmissions. Can I replace the long tail piece on the '79 2WD C6 with the shorter tail piece from my '75 4WD? I want to keep the tail piece because it is the mounting point for my transfer case linkage back to my divorced NP203. Thanks for the help, Mike

I would believe you could BUT you will be having to change the output shaft also.

You have to tear the trans completely down, there is no way out. The tail shaft has to be changed over & it has to come completely apart to do that, so you might as well rebuild what you have.

Thanks for the responses.. I plan on tearing down the 2WD transmission anyway to rebuild it. The driving force behind this effort is a motor swap from a 360FE (big block C6 bellhousing) to a 300-6 (small block C6 bellhousing). The 2WD C6 is part of a 300-6/C6 combo that I'm getting from a '79 F250 2WD.
