Check this and tell me what you think.
These people are hypermilers and what they can do is amazing, and sometimes dangerous.
My little post on tire pressure came from a link on one of their threads.
With gas at $3.77gal as I post and doing a 30mi round trip in hilly country in my truck, I'm exploring all avenues.
My goal is 25mpg without shutting down the engine or getting run over. I think I can do it.

"YOU DON'T NEED A BLOODY CHERRYPICKER TO GET THINGS OUT OF THE BED"
One of the best gas savers is simple, very simple. SLOW DOWN. Why we have to be told to do so by the government, and the setting of lower speed limits to do so is a mystery to me. Even at that, many will still keep their foot in the throttle, let their cars and trucks sit around idling in the parking lots, and bitch like hell at gas prices. jd

Spend the money on a Scanguage. That will probably help you more than anything. Watching the real time fuel economy will go a long way toward figuring out what works best.

But environmentalists are frustrated. "It is ridiculous that we live in what is presumed to be one of the greenest states in the nation, yet we have the most antiquated laws to deal with green energy," said Josh Tickell...
Ummmmm....California? Guess it's been a long time since I've visited the "clean air" state.
Intresting, I had never heard of the word "hypermiler" before today. Jimdandy is right saving gas is simple, KEEP YOUR FOOT OUT OF IT!!! Your not driving a race car.
i do about 85% highway driving. when i drove like a "normal person", 75 on the highway, i got 23 miles per gallon. recently i have slowed down to 55 and have gotten 27 on two consecutive tanks and 29 on my last tank.
agressive full throutle driveing really increase fuel consumptiou up to twice. it is true, it was true, it has been thrue form beginning of aotomotive era.
Now about point of best fuel efficiency of engine. Different engines have different regimes of fuel efficiency. You are to drive neat this point. For 3.0 it is 1200-2000 RPM with 1/4 engine load. Sometimes it is better to shift down driving up a hill to save fuel.
New engines have sufusticated electronics expanding fuel economy range of RPMs and throutle position and as I can see difference of MPG on one car/truck with different engines may be about 5-7%. But if you drive wrong with big engine you will loose more gas for nothing then with small.
I don't care how much you save, we are in big trouble. I heard on the news yesterday that 4.00 a gallon gas is here and oil could reach 200 a barrel soon, that would be 7.00 a gallon gas. Food, everything will sky rocket, we will have run away inflation. Us poor people will be doomed. We heat our home with fuel oil, I hate to think what it will cost by next winter. It's not even funny anymore, it's a crisis. These are very scarey and uncertain times were living in.

i read once where 45 mph is about the max on speed before wind resistance starts playing a part in fuel economy. i tend to beleive that just from watching my vaccum guage while pulling my trailer.
It won't help to save opec's gas anyway, it will just give them more to sell us back at a higher price another day. We need our own energy and yes, conserve it. We need to drill, drill , drill and I mean now. Also Columbia has discovered a large oil deposite and thier not in opec. Also 90% of columbian vehicles run on E-85 or bio diesel made from sugar beets. They swore never to get caught with thier pants down again like they did with the oil embargo of 74, so they weaned off oil. Between north and south america, we have enough oil reserves that we wouldn't need a drop of opec oil for at least 150 years the experts say. The AL Gores of the world are keeping us from getting our own oil and it's getting old. Then some want to punish the oil companies because of thier profits, that will really give them the incentive to drill for more.

Contries exporting oil and other resources try to increase oil price to get more money, but they run inflation of Dollar and Euro and as result they loose money to get food. America, Russia and Europe will survive anyway, but many countries trying to rise oil price now will get starvation, famine, war and other very bad problems. As result their population will decrease....
From other view point there is oil price limit when other energy technologies will be usefull in transportation and who'll need gas after that. But it will not save 3-rd World countries. I think next 3-10 years we'll see humanitary disasters, like no food, no water to drink... Just becouse they try to increase oil price now.
Trucks are not known for great MPG's. If MPG's are a concern get a sedan or even a minivan. Ford and Dodge trucks are the worst offenders. I own both so I know. Try not to drive like alot of people- speeding up to stop lights and then speeding away from them. Keeping your foot out of it will really help. I don't drive either truck that often so its not really an issue. If my only transportation was a Ford or Dodge truck that would suck big time @ 4.00 a gallon for gas.
a smaller car might be a answer, sure, but if go into debt and get rid of my 15city/18 hwy mpg ranger that was paid for and end up with a 30 mpg econobox thats, not plus has higher insurance due to having a lein on it, have i really saved money? and then those times i do need the truck, id have to drive 40 miles round trip to my folks to borrow one, then id be feeding a 351 thats alot less forgiving on fuel consumption than my 4.0, i dont know of any van that would meet my needs. i would consider a motorcycle if i could find a reliable one cheap enough. but then im in ohio, very seasonal bike country.
Europeans have generally small cars, but as result Europe use less gas, but gas prices a higher... So if all America will drive small cars prices will increase anyway
