Any idea what motor this might be?

This is in a 54 F100 I picked up, no chance to clean it up yet.

I only have two thoughts here. One would be a Y-block ford, the other would be one of the normally orange engines.... Run it by the Y-block gang, they will chime in.

Sure reminds me of the ugly thing under the hood of Grandma's 76 Nova but cant say for sure. On the upside that was a damn good ole car to her.

Looking at the album now I know i'm right.. 305 out of a late model chevy truck. Probably totalled so they stole the good stuff to mutilate a decent Ford.

I was going to guess Pontiac, but if you've id'd as sbc so be it. It is not an FE, not a Y block, not a W....

Weren't those the years even the Pontiac's had Chevy engines? My Grandfather had a 77 Ventura and he got a rebate from GM because it had a Chevy 305 in it. Some sort of big engine snafu at GM with the Pontiacs. Think he got like $100 back or something. I vagely remember that.

I was guessing Poncho due to the color. I think the 400 remained a Poncho.

Yes, there was some contest about Chev motors in Pontiac...Ralph Nadar hissef talked about this once on some show I was watching, he also mentioned the Ford 3 speeds in GM cars. Perhaps it was a class action, and because you "didn't know" it was a Chev, you got the $100....

The valve covers have that fat look, but they are 4 bolt like sbc (I think, IIRCAATY) The fat look says Poncho to me, but someone else was sure it was sbc....

I'm almost at IDGAS again...someone else will figure it out.

It's a Pontiac probably somewhere around 350/400 CID.

Maybe thats where I've seen it. The valve cover cap is un-mistaken and the freeze plug, high school buddies mom had a 4 door late 80's thing that was a pontiac. Remember agreeing to tune it up for her, man that thing was a POS. She exclaimed it started shaking so I checked the oil dipstick for a look at the color/smell.. wow silver and clean as a whistle. We got an entire qt of oil out of the thing LMAO!!

Looks like a 389 or 326 Pontiac to me, somewhere in the 60's maybe early 70's. Can't remember when they changed to the 400, also a possibility. Don't believe it is a 455 though.

I'm pretty sure 326 and 389 were and probably the 400, sorta like the fe's if I remember right. Don't know about the 455. Think it was originally a Buick or Olds block?

Oldsmobile, but the 455 Olds uses a different valve cover than Jeff's engine has.

There are three cutouts on the upper side of the covers.

I have a pic of the Olds 455, in a 1968 Olds I sold recently.

Email me off FTE, I'll send an engine pic back, but do it before the 10th of May.

All the engine paint is the original, the car had 40K actual miles, and was a one owner till 2005.

color looks to be pontiac, if there is an air gap under intake probably pontiac. if no air gap probably oldsmobile. let us know when you find out for sure.
