I'm building a 428 for a 74 F100 4x4. I'm slowly collecting parts here and there. So far i have the block and the rods. A friend of mine has a set of 427 lowrise heads. The current motor in the truck is a 390 with a 12.5-1 CR. It's also on propane and i plan to keep it on it. Are the lowrise 427 heads a good choice or should I keep looking? The block is a 1971 and the heads are 1963.
The stock 390 and 428 are the same head. If you have a 428CJ then the heads are the same as the 427LR. So going from a stock 428 head to the 427LR will be and improvement.

If the heads are in good shape and can get them for a decent price by all means. With them already have larger 2.09-1.65 valves your ahead of the game. If they have 1.73 exhaust valves (which is/was a popular upgrade) you'll have to double check your clearances carefully and notch the cyl to clear. They should have the std FE valve spacing. The high risers were the first to use a wider valve spacing as I remember. What's the casting number off them?
You also have to watch on getting to big on the exhaust side...As they will breath better on the top end provided your intake,Cam,Carb, and exhaust can handle it...you will loose some low end with a Big Exhaust Valve depending on your build.. JMO..

I'm out of town right now so i don't have access to the numbers. I would say they're in good shape. They do have a couple of cracks on the lip of the chambers (where the valve sits) but i think they can be fixed by a competent shop. Price is $200 for the pair.

At that price I would be measuring valves and ports to make sure they are what he claims. Way to cheap for 427 or any hi-po heads.

Well post what casting number they are when you can. $200 is cheap (for 427 heads) but they might need a whole lot more to fix properly. You'd want an estimate before you buy. When all is said and done you might be able to get better heads for the same money. Other than the larger valves the early 427 heads were about the same as other lowrisers. Except for the J heads with raised intake floors which flowed a bit better. Valve spacing was the same. A cherry set of C4AE-6090-G's with CJ size valves and some port/polish will be the same. Depending on where the cracks are in the chamber you might be looking at valve seats to fix the damage. Besides pinning and welding. But I'm sure the shop can tell you exactly what your looking at. Also see and ask how much they have been milled. Not to discourage you but sometimes spending less will cost ya more!!! But for sure look into them and compare your costs.
The seller is a good friend of mine so i'm not worried about him. I'm home now so i'll check the numbers tomorrow and let you know. Thanks for all the help.
