white smoke, any ideas?

My first project is a 79 f-150 with a 400. I just purchased this and there is white smoke coming out the exhaust. I dont belive it is oil smoke because it doesnt smell like it is burning oil. I bought the truck with the intent to rebuild the motor, but if i dont need to that is even better. I appreciate all input, as I said I am new at this. Thanks!

hmmmm, i just had that problem on mine, identify which side of the the engine is smoking the white smoke (its water), I have doble exauhst so i could, and pull of the head and check it for cracks and other, could also be a bad head gasket or head plug, my prob was under one of the newly inserted valve guides(a whole) injecting water into my #8 cylinder.. to be sure go unpluging one by one the spark plugs and giving a bit of start to the engine, water should be coming out of one of them....

White smoke is steam, that means there is water/coolant being burned somewhere. It could be a leaking head gasket, cracked cylinder head or cracked block. A cracked block will often allow water to leak into the oil pan, so draining the oil and checking it for water might be one way to narrow the search.

It could also be tranny fluid if you have an automatic. From a ruptured vacuum modulator on the tranny.
