That's what I appear to have been told, that per gallon it's about 50-60% of the (current) cost of gasoline/gallon here.

I wouldn't do the conversion myself - mainly because I don't want a live explodable bomb in my cargo area (not that a gas tank is much better) but because I wouldn't want to give up the cargo room, nor wonder where the hell I would get a fill when taking trips. My assumption is that this is a good idea where applicable, and when fuel prices were lower - all fuels, there was a cost analysis that made sense (and maybe still does internationally where gas prices are consistently higher). Not much different than me thinking the PSD was the way to go over the V-10, and in todays market, that too has proved fairly innacurate, or at best - almost even.
Unless you do a total conversion, my understanding is that there is a switch placed on the dash that is just like switching tanks from gas to propane. So when you run out of propane you just switch to gasoline until you fill back up on propane. jhough can verify this.

True.
The system is auto.
You always start the engine om petrol. When it is hot enough (+35C) it switches to propane.
You can switch manually between petrol and propane at any time.
