Hey guys. Went and talked to the muffler shop today. The mechanic said he'll gut cat number one, and replace cat number two with a high flow cat. I already have a Flowmaster. He said he has to put a turn down on it when he's finished. So my new exhaust setup will be; One highflow cat; Flowmaster Super 40 w/ turndown. Oh! I should note my truck is in the shop right now; the guy is working on it. He said it would be about $300.
I'm curious as to how this is going to turn out. If it sounds disgusting, I can always run a pipe to the rear and make it quiet.Can anyone tell me what to expect? Any preformance gain? How will it sound? Good? Bad? I like the way it sounds now but always wanted to get rid of the stock cats; they have over 200K miles and I'm pretty sure one of my cats is plugging up.
If I can, I'll try to get a soundclip when it's all said and done. This is my only day off and I have company coming from illinois (they're actually moving down here) so I'll be a busy man for the rest of the day.

You should see better throttle response, and mabye a little power. The engine should run more freely compared to stock.

Anyway I got the truck back. It's quieter at idle. Sounds OKAY revving and sounds good at acceleration. I feel like I've gained power. Overall, it's better than stock.

i also agree though flo's on a 6cyl dont sound just right... magnaflow may be the way to go though... let us know how that goes... if it goes...

Thank you, I agree. Most people say Flowmasters don't sound good on six's. That's what made me try the FlowmasterSuper40; I heard it on a Six shooter pontiac with duals. I thought it was an 8.
Why is it some mufflers do sound deeper?? What is it that makes them sound deeper over time?
Sounds good for a 4.9. I think you did the right thing.

Thanks a lot. I've tied up hundreds of dollars into my exhaust trying to get it to sound good. I've heard 6 cyl's sound good, so I knew it could be done. I thought it would be easy with a 4.9 because it's such a big six. I'm glad I got rid of that ricer tone, though. Just like Optical Illusion, I didn't realize my truck sounded like a ricer untill my dad took off in it! Ha
When I had glasspacks on my truck, I never did notice any real difference over time. Maybe because I ran the glasspacks all the way to the rear?
