On my way to the scrap yard yesterday I passed a party store where there was a 75-76 F 250 4x4 high boy I think on a trailer nice cab but a 80s bed on it. Thought with the correct bed on it would be a great start for a restoration or donor truck. started to turn around to talk to the guy but thought he just picked it up he prob dosent want to sell it. Got to the salvage yard and was on loading steel copper ect. while trying to watch this operater with a monster claw machine working 15' behind me and swinging huge loads of steel almost directly over my head, hearing glass brake and the large crunch of steel being smashed I looked back to see that monster with its claw picking up the hole f250 by the cab smashing it so hard that drivers door and pass door where almost touching and flinging it almost over me into the scrap pile. I am still feeling rather sick over it today could have got it for scrap price. all was there this was no junker! had to get this out. Never hurts to ask this is what I am going by from here on out.
I just threw up a little bit in my mouth
Thanks for telling that horrible story
you should be ashamed of yourself
I going to have to sleep with the lights on now
With no sign of scrap prices coming down any time soon i'm afraid that's going to be a much more common scenario, i was just at the one and only salvage yard we have here in my small town this past weekend, keep in mind this is a yard owner who made it a point to keep all the pre '80 ford trucks seperated from the other junk and and he had around 13 dentsides and 7 bumpsides that have been there for years as he slowly parted them out over time, well needless to say when i pulled into the gates this past weekend i witnessed the end of an era in progress, they were all crushed and being loaded up for the scraper before my eyes, even though i'd been through these trucks at least a hundred times and salvaged many a part from them over the years it was still nice just knowing they were out there ready to offer up that hard to find part should i need it, but no longer.
Sheer econimics are forcing such choices. My truck is no longer is a daily driver due to gas prices, but I see no reason to go to extremes of giving it away on evilbay or scraping it. It is getting harder, real fast, to justify to ourselves with any real reasons why we should continue to run our rigs. They sure are fun though and that is enough for me..for now.

I here you on the economics! and will keep my policital thoughts on this one, even though I would like to vent about them also. I had hoped that some one could cheer me up on this one FTE Ken came close. I would have gladly gave 500.00 for the truck delivered 10 miles from the salvage yard. I will say that I had 1000 pounds of scrap steel and that was worth 98.00 I dont know what the weight of that truck was but I can tell you that even if it had no brakes bad trans and a nocking motor I would have been happy to pay the 500.00 I mentioed, just from what I saw and to save what will one day be some thing those two guys will regret scraping I hope! as much as I do not turning around to talk to them about buying it. Live and learn . I have been thinking of going back to see if there is any thing left that has not been destroyed. prob allready a Toyota or Honda ha ha NOT! Ok I am done wining.

I frequent the recycle yard weekly to try and find a good deal on scrap steel for fabricating "stuff". 2 weeks ago there was a '76 CrewCab F250 2x in the pile that appeared to have been straight as an arrow and rust free. Until the tops of the doors kissed each other when the hoe moved it. I wanted to cry, my buddy Teds74 looked for one of those for years and finally gave up and bought a '68 Dodge crew.
Last week I watched a "numb-nut" driving an old Dodge unload another '75-ish F250 2x Explorer and once again it was straight as an arrow. It even had the desirable mirrors on it. I gave the driver a dirty look that should have killed him in his tracks. I hope he felt my disgust for his lack of morals. I went and talked to the manager to try and get the mirrors and he bluntly said "NO". I guess he can't sell parts to the public due to liability issues.
I think I may have to go and pay new steel prices from now on, I hate coming home from there pissed off from what I missed instead of happy about my found treasures.
I would like to kick the people in the "who-whos" that think this is acceptable behavior. They could have made more money parting them out and selling the pieces. Stupid granola crunchers and their miscalculated carbon foot print mumbo jumbo. It is much cleaner to continue to use the cars that are already built than to recycle them and make more cars. That releases even more carbon. 3 processes instead of 1.
I have to stop now before I hemorrhage and start saying words that I shouldn't.
The other side to the story could be that the guy tried selling it and no one wanted it..
My son was trying to sell a 79 F350 Crew Cab.. It needed work, but had a solid cab and working Dump body.. He started at $1,500.00 and slowly went down to $500.00 and no one wanted it..
He scrapped it and walked away with $700.00.. While he was there he saw another Late 70's F350 dump being dropped off for the crusher..
A week after he crushed it, he got 5 calls asking if he still had it..
And it isn't like he just advertised it for a few days.. I think he tried for at least 6 months if not longer...

As far as Im concerned, scrap yard guys are plain idiots. I understand fully the recycle part, my hatred is just from dealing with these so called humans.
I had to unload alot of parts recently due to moving-not many special parts, but stuff collected over the years. I had an old C6 in the back of my pristine 74 box, one guy said "any oil in that tranny? Hope not or the magnet operator will drop it right back in your truck if he see's oil coming out of it." It never did leak any oil out, and I didn't have to rearrange the magnet operators face-so that time went ok.
The last load, weighed 1800# which my old highboy carried with no complaints-had everything sorted nicely, then came magnet man... This time I had no transmission for him to worry about, but he hooked the side of my box, folding the lip up on one side. After a quick look, I luckily realized it wasn't that bad-wasn't much to do, I just wanted the hell out of there. I later massaged it into its original position, and looks just as good as before-minus some paint. I also did notice some dents on the inside of the box and tailgate my truck never had before-due to chunks of steel falling off that friggin magnet.
If I ever recycle large amounts like that again, I will use some old trailer so I don't have to worry about sacrificing my truck. I have a feeling, the recycler wouldn't have done anything if it was worst damage. Every time I have had to explain most metals, because the "experts" don't know crappola!
So be wary of heavy equipment around your trucks!

Crushing is never the answer. I would have given a $1000 for it if I had been in your area and known about it. If your going to crush it, you should have your old vehicles confiscated and be sentenced to life driving a Hyundai or a Daewoo. They aren't making anymore of these classics, and the new cars and trucks are built like import junk.
I was going to mention the story Scott already told, but there's more: no matter what you like (ford, chevy, dodge-car or truck) it is hard to see rust free vehicles going for scrap. Having grown up in the rustbelt, it is hard to watch when you know someone in Ohio or New York would pay through the nose for it.
