PROSTOCK is starting off with a positive reputation.
I can't imagine why you would have to pull more than the hood and radiator out of your truck. I can't say that I have worked on your year model, but I have worked those before and after....never in the world would pull the front clip!

I think it's due to the highboy thing. My hoist barely gets the engine over the top of a standard f100 with 15" tires once the FE load is taken off the shocks LMAO!! But Agreed, if it wasnt mandatory.. aint no way in HE!! i'd bother with all that

Lol yeah prostock that 390 will not clear the radiator with the cherry picker - it's too tall. Besides, it doesn't seem that tough to pull the front off, I just seem to be missing a couple of bolts. Thanks for the link redman I'll check it out!

It would be money better spent on having a shop do all the work. Or getting something else for an engine. If you are not a machinist then its better left to someone that is. Unless you are a builder, and know what you can and can't get away with. There are lots of little details that have to be done, and if you omit or forget one then you could trash all the money spent on parts and machine work. An engine in your vehicle is not the place to learn or practice on.
If you spend $500 now for parts and machine work, and it gets goofed up because of what ever. Then your out that 500 and what ever else it costs to get another engine.

I pulled the engine out of my highboy multiple times without removing the grill or radiator support. But if your engine hoist is that low, removing the radiator support is a BITCH.

It's the only thing holding the fenders (and fenderwells) up.

If you have to, consider removing the front wheels and sitting the front axle on small blocks/jackstands.

Oh, and remember, if you have the block hot-tanked, you must put NEW cam bearings in. They melt

Thanks for the advice guys - I think a hot tank and new cam bearings are in order. My plan is to get the bottom end rebuilt as long as the machinist says the clearances are OK. Then I am planning on assembling it myself. I suppose for the $$ it may be worth having the machinist assemble the bottom end since all the parts will already be there. I probably will also have the heads redone as well, as long as time allows and my budget allows. I'm in no real hurry, and I want a running machine but again, it's not for the track and is going to be a hauler and project truck.

After the hot tank I would prefer to have the block painted (Ford Blue) and look nice - what type of paint would I need to pick up for that?

Heads add 300 min and around 700 if they are older and need seats and guides etc,.. ground up job. Sounds like the best bet might be to drop it off and pick it up when it's done paying as you go.. thats what I did. Well I'll be assembling it all but the pay as we progress thing was plenty cool with the machinist. now we just need to go get everything.. arggg!!

Sounds like you have a good relationship with your machinist! I have yet to meet mine, as I just got prices over the phone - it may turn into something like that for me if possible.

Maybe I'll get lucky and the heads will be in spec - that would save a lot of time and $$.
