i'm wondering what would be the best 2bbl for an '81 302. my 4bbl will not pass smog cuz its a non-egr Weiand intake... so im just gonna put my 2bbl intake back on till i have enough money for an edelbrock 4bbl intake with an EGR port on it. SO give me your opinions. i have my stock motorcraft and a 500cfm holley.
I would really want to use the holley, if someone could tell me what jets and pump cam are appropriate for a higher altitude truck (4,000 ft.)
OR point me in the direction of a 4bbl 302 stock cast iron intake. I checked pick n pull in carson city and sparks, Nevada and they dont have any. If you know where one is, send me a PM
There was also a cast aluminum intake used on 83-85 Mustang, if you are not dead set on using a cast iron one. There were marine iron 4Vs used on boats, so there's another source.
wow thanks Baron von Automatic! saving me $200 from Summit! I figured shipping is ~$25. Got a 4100 by any chance? i got some questions for guys with this autolite: how similar is it to a Holley? i got jet kits, gaskets and acell. cams for holleys so dont wanna waste money on pre-bought jets/cams
"...autolite: how similar is it to a Holley? i got jet kits, gaskets and acell. cams..."
Most parts are not interchangeable. Early Autolites (pre-63 or so?) use Holley size jets, later ones are different. Other parts they do have in common are power valves and possibly accelerator pumps.
The other common parts like needle and seat assemblies, accelerator cams, booster assemblies, gaskets etc. are very different. The carburetors are quite different styles.
When I looked at the Ebay a few days ago there was an early Autolite 4100, if you plan to buy one you could ask the seller to check the jet size to see if it's small (Holley) size or later large (Ford) size. But then these early carbs are for bigger FE engines so won't work so well on a stock 302. One from a 289 would be more suitable.
But since you already have a 500cfm Holley perhaps you should just use it.
i have decided on buying the 4bbl intake from Baron automatic. it is lighter than the 2bbl (thank god) and i may have some better fuel mileage with it.
-any particular EGR spacer/plate i should look for? seems to me all the plates look the same. i have one from a 460 and one from a 351W.
The 351W spacer should be better as it should be a closer match to the hole sizes in the intake.
You have to make sure that the big EGR slot is covered. Since it ducts hot exhaust gases you need to use a high temperature gasket on it.
I have a set up that came to me in a ford custom (78) that was totaled, its a 302 holley with egr and a 450 holley I striped the eng. and was saving it for a future project.the carb I have sitting in a dip tank for over a year now. JNT
sweet, now if only i couldget PAID (i dont get paid till wednesday for my odd-job i did) so i can get that aluminum manifold. I'll try to dig up my 351W egr plate... if i dont find it or its rusting away somewhere, any alternatives? edelbrock makes one but it is only for their manifolds (they got a little hole in it, OEM is a huge port)?
Hi Kuskoal,
By EGR plate, do you mean the four hole spacer? If so, and if you can't find it use the 460 four hole spacer. If this one doesn't cover the EGR hole (or slot) you will have to figure out another way to block this off. Welding it shut would work well. But insure that the exhaust passage still is open from one side of the manifold to the other. A careful welder could cut an oblong plate to fit the EGR opening, then hold it a sixteenth inch or so below the surface so the weld bead will almost all end up below the machined surface. Carefully file off any protruding weld.
yes i am talking about the 4-hole spacer. I cant find my 351W spacer (that sucks) and my 460 spacer i welded shut for my escapade on avoiding this problem. SO BACK TO THE JUNKYARD! i have fun there .
