I just bought a code reader to pull my codes due to the CEL being on - I have an 02 Windstar as well. I also had P0171 and P0174 as well (but mot P0401). They are indicating a lean condition on banks 1 & 2. Apparently this is typical 3.8 problem and is often traced to vacuum leaks on the intake manifold. Theres a link I found on while I was on my other computer that details the process to change all the usal suspect gaskets. I'll post it if you still have this issue. Another recent FTE poster found some vacuum lines cracked and that caused these codes as well. I'll gonna check really close for that before pulling the manifold apart

John, I fixed it by replacing the bolts that hold the intake on and I made the mistake of buying them from Ford because they cost over 50 bucks for 8 bolts with washers and later I found them on Ebay much cheaper. The CEL light is back on now but my Son in Law drives the car and he don't have to get it inspected till next year. Tom
