I talked my dad into swapping his engine for a 351. I am new to Fords and this will be my 1st V8/Ford project. However, this is my 10th or more swap Ive sone on a car, so I am mechanically inclined. I just have a few questions. I am trying to do a "direct swap" type of deal. No bs with changing from carburation to EFI.
Specs on the truck:
93 F150 XL Short box inline 6 5 speed 92,000 miles 1 owner
All I know as of right now:
Any early 92-95 351 Should bolt up and work
wire harness and ecu will plug into my truck
351 will bolt up to the stock I6 5 speed trans.
^please inform me if I am incorrect.
Questions:
What trans code do I have (I6 5 Speed)
What year 351's with "plug and play" electonic wise?
What motor mounts will I need to bolt up to the sub frame?
What flywheel/clutch combination will I need?
Your trans code will be on a sticker in the drivers door jamb, you motor mounts will need to come off a truck with a 302 or 351 92-96 you cam most likely use any mount from 87-96 but I am not positive on that. I would try to find a complete donor truck in a salvage yard so all the little stuff doesn't nickel and dime you to death. Your tranny should be an Mazda M5OD.

get a donor as mentioned above of the same 92-95 era as possible. haivng a complete 5.8 would help as well. you will be changing just about everything under the hood since the 300-6 wiring wont work, of course the computer will also need changed. the 5speed m5od will hold up to minor use but if you get frisky prepare for carnage. best to look for a zf 5 speed if you want to keep a stick shift otherwise going with the e4od would be your only option.
question is this a 2wd or 4wd and what are you looking to get out of this swap? personally i love the 300-6, it will last twice as long and get better fuel mileage but still wheel great due to its low rpm torque.
Im basically doing this swap because I want to tackle some V8 stuff. Im getting bored with the cars I work on. The truck is rarely driven so the MPG isnt too big of an issue.
Thats what i was thinking 92-95 5.8L. That way everything is obd1 and it should all "plug" right in.
What is a zf5 speed? What is it from? I have no big plans for power anytime soon, just to get it running and reliable. I plan on doing alot of maintenance work on the engine while it is out.
this is going to be a 2wd street truck. Just something to play around with. Mainly trying to replicate a Lightning (body wise) and hopefully get over 240 crank hp (its kind of weak in my eyes). But like i said earlier, i just want to get the truck running for now.
Will an ecu from a 4wd 351 manual work? I think it is going to be hard to find a 351 stick shift 2wd truck and ecu...
well if your going to drive it like a lightning the m5od wont last at all. its like a T-5 for the stang. good tranny until you hit that magic torque number and it lets go on ya.
the zf 5speed can be found in any F250/f350 running the small block bolt pattern ie 300-6,5.0,5.8. it is more of a truck tranny though. i would see if a Tremec 5 speed would fit in there behind the 5.8 it would be far more streetable.
I would also go mass air. since the current engine harness wont work anyway, use a stang harness and cut it and splice in for proper length. this will give you tunability when your ready.

In '93 it's not entirely likely, you'll have to tell us if it has a mass air meter or not. And even if it is, the 6-cyl engine wiring and computer is no good for a V8 so it all has to be changed anyway.
