I have a '96 with the 460 in it and 3.55 rear end. I am getting 15 MPG with it and it is my daily driver. My personal record is 16 MPG.

I run mid grade in my truck. Low grade does not work too well in my truck. I use premium if I have to work it.

I spent a lot of time and money putting a 351w and AOD in my 71 F100 and the best mileage I could squeeze out of that thing was around 14 mpg. That was with 3.70 gears in it nad driving it real easy. I tried the old 3.25 gears and mileage went down.
I figured if I am going to get big block gas mileage I am going to have big block torque. So I pulled the Windsor and dropped in a mild 460/c6 and 3.0 gears.
I have loved it every since. I still don't get great mileage but when I barely step on the gas a little bit and walk away from everybody else at the stop light it sure puts a smile on my face.
I can get around 14mpg on the interstate if I run the speed limit and keep a steady foot keeping the accelerator pump from squirting too much raw fuel down the throat.
I am also running a 31-10.50-15" tire so that has an effect on the total gearing as well.
I have a 3.25 with a Lock Rite in it that I am going to put in there when I get motivated enough.
I believe that in a light truck like an F100-150 with the right gearing and set up that decent mpg is possible.
If I had the money I would try a later model fuel injected engine in my truck. I bet I could get 17-18 out of it if driven easy and set up right
That would sure **** off the 6 cylinder guys

I have a 73 460 in my 74 hi boy and at 75 mph i had 8 mpg on premium fuel. That was before I started having problems with loss of power and backfiring but I'm still working on that. Just curious, what times do you all get 0-60?

0-60 times? I haven't timed that yet. Let me look into that and I will post as soon as I get it.

I just pretty much finished my 460 swap, and I have only driven it 19 miles since. 6 of those miles was with a light load on the trailer, during which time I found out my radiator was insufficient. The 12 mile jaunt (to the scrap yard and back) would typically use 1/4 tank of gas (4.75 gallons, 19 gallon tank) with the old tired 351, and the needle barely budged with the 460. I don't know what kind of mpg I'm getting with the 460, but it's better than I was getting with the 351.

Yup Im guessing most trucks are getting 10-12 MPG with these motors. Im a big 460 fan for sure. I have had a bunch over the years an there very tough an durable. Like my sig says Built Ford Tough. I have two in industrial applications specifically irrigation motors. One will have a 20th birthday this year. 15,000 hrs an still purring like a kitten. Or should I say roarin like a lion. It has open headers. My dream truck would be a 79 4wd 250 with a 460 under the hood. Nice aftermarket exhaust with chrome tips out the back. Then put the pedal town an listen to that sound off Ford power at its best cackling as you blow by that hemi. All you guys should be proud off your trucks. One time a friend who had a 460 with a 4 barrel carb was punching it going down the highway an when those 4 barrels kicked in the tires broke loose for just a second. If that dont make you grin from ear to ear what will. AWESOME YAH. Hey JesterPgh your going to love that 460 under the hood. BTW what id you swap that 460 in to?

Well changed things out, 3 row rad, new stat, etc, and it's good...I did the swap on my 1985 F250XL 4x4. It's my frankenstein truck; Sterling 10.25 srw, I am fairly positive it's a d44 ttb front, D9TE block, unsure of the year of the trans, or even what it came from, either a 250 or 350, and a 1978 NP 205 t-case.

Here is what I hear everyday. It is all about the rear end! I am told the higher the rpm the less load you have on the motor. I have a 2.54 and Harley keeps telling me I need to change to a 3.7 or 4.11 gear, so I up my rmp so my gas milage will go up plus have more power. What do you guys think.

Well, I have 4.10's and that is NOT the way to mileage.
At least if you're ever on the highway..... (i'm turning 3k@ 60 w/ stock 235/85 r16's)

The 460 is a torque monster compared to the other F-series engines available.
I think you'd be best off w/ something in the 3.25-3.50 range depending on what you haul and how you drive.

I have a 462 in my 69 lincohn with 3.25 rear and I am happy with it. It is the 460 with 2.5? rearend that I need the help with so thank you. Your 4.10 gets what type of milage? I need to get this dude off my back about the right match up. He keeps telling me he can walk away from most rigs just by putting in a higher set of gears.
Thanks

I have the 3.55 gears in mine. I keep my rpm's at 1500. More rpm's generally mean your engine is working more.

Not to hear Harley talk. He puts it like this, "Math wise" I just was hearing him again, to keep the argument going. my Lincoln weighs 5660 pounds I have 2.84 gears in it if I were to change to lets say 3.25 gears the difference is .41 so to divide that by what I have I end up with a 14.4 % difference in my load or i reduce the weight by 817.11 pounds.
This is hard to argue, ya think
So lets say I went to 3.7 gears my ratio difference is .86 so to divide that by what I have I end up with a 30.2 % difference so I reduce the weight by 1861.16 pounds which in turn should use less gas and give me more pow-er.
He says to me I is because they want use to believe that lower rpm saves gas, which in turn makes the big corps more money. The dummying of Americans as he puts it.
So give me all your arguments, PLEASE

OH I am just getting started here to. Stick around, " for more what you think" ideas floating in my brain.
Like I said from the start, I will thank you now.

This seems to be a big topic of discussion in many threads and forums. I say that it is experiment time.
