Rear Axle Noise...could it be....bearings...fluid??
I don't know diddly about transmission components on these trucks...but I have some noise coming from the rear axle...could it be a bearing...and if so WHERE...or could it be Diff fluid?? How do I check that and top it off?? Have the fluid...just want a little guidance, so hopefully I will save a little time on this project.
Thanks!

might be carrier bearings.
what year and model is the truck? what rear? 9" or d60?
if its got a removeable cover, pop it off, check the oil for heavy shavings.
check if the carrier goes SIDE TO SIDE.

Is the filler plug on the top side of the diff? My truck has whatever rear end comes standard with a 2000 Excursion 7.3 Diesel...it is not the real low rear end!! It's hard to hear anything coming from it at much speed primarily due to road noise. It may very well be singin' like a sparrow...but I can't hear it that much unless I am off the throttle and coasting under 30mph...

Thank you guys for responding...this truck has had constant issues since I bought it...so I am through with the dealer service thing...
ANOTHER QUESTION...should the A/C condenser be dripping even when I am NOT using the A/C?? I have the vents on, but NOT on A/C - but I was getting a pretty steady drip behind the right front tire...doesn't seem normal to me!!
