Well i dont have a compression gauge...which is sad because i'm a professional mechanic for 10 years and dont have one. But...i ordered all the good stuff for my top end thanks to george w. i'll get all that where i want it, and if i still have the same problem i'll get a compression gauge and go from there. If i burnt a valve or seat...it'd be annoying but not the end of the world, just an excuse to get aussies i guess.

The 400 in my old Torino made the same sort of noise. Turned out to be a burned and leaking exhaust valve.

Well i re-did the valvetrain today, took my time to adjust everything and make sure it was perfect. I think my method of adjusting the valves was just flat out wrong, i'm positive that was the problem and that i got it right this time.

I fired it up for a minute or so and it sounded a LOT better, no more sputtering or popping. The problem was in the process THIS happened...

So...i got another thing to deal with now.

Alright...so back to square one.

I got everything back together and fired it up. It's running a lot smoother now after i re-did the valves, but i'm getting a backfire out the exhaust still.

It was idling fine for about 2 minutes, then it started doing it again.

So...i'm going to go get a compression gauge tomorrow, but i'm thinking it cant be the compression, otherwise it wouldnt of been idling fine to start with.

Btw, all the gauges i looked at said they have adapters for 14mm and 18mm....what size is the plug hole on the 400s?

Well, mine are 14 mm (5/8 spark plug hex). 18 mm is for 13/16 hex plugs.

Ford rebuilders knew it, cut out.

On the 351m/400 on the drivers side, there are 2 plug wires that run side by side from the dist to the plugs. Cant remember if it is the middle 2 or the last 2. Sometimes with timing problems the rotor line up to the cap there is a cross fire of the 2 cylinders and a miss fire if you will. To fix, separate the 2 wires with wire separators or use some wire lume plastic insulators Summit has kits with dif colors. Causes a missing or a pop cut out type thing. Saw it in a Ford rebuild book or Ford manual somewhere a long while back. Sometimes it is a ark over from the wires so close and side by side all the run, just those 2.

Bronco is correct, But also look at the distributor. The wires have to run through the top one way only. I know it does not look neat, but get the FORD diagram and follow it exact. It you don't, a crossfire will happen.
