Won't downshift unless let off gas

I have a 2000 Crew 4x4 V10. When I start up a hill and gradually add gas the tranny won't downshift unless I let up on the gas. If I floor it it will downshift too. Any ideas?

No idea here. It shouldn't downshift when you let up on the gas. It should upshift when you let up on the gas.

I guess I should have said that when I let up on the gas and step on it again it downshifts.

I am not exactly sure what you are saying is the same thing i complained about in my 04 SD 4x4 or not. When i bought my SD new i noticed that as i went up a hill or other load bearing situations i would slightly give it more pedal, most of the time this occured after converter lock up,i expected it to not downshift, but to just unlock, with a little more pedal it would downshift, at that point it was just too much, too much pedal, too many revs. Every car/truck i have ever driven would just unlock under the same conditions, i think most people can't tell the difference between unlock, and a downshift, After i drove the truck a few more times i noticed that when i wanted it to unlock, not down-shift, i would just take my foot off the gas for a moment, bang, unlock.I hope i didn't make this confusing. Now i am used to it i do it without thinking.

I've noticed the same thing - if you slowly lay into the pedal with a good load (or going up a steep hill) it won't downshift.

If you snap the throttle, it'll do it in the same conditions.

I always took it as a way to keep from downshifting under a heavy load, when you don't want it. Never saw it mentioned in the owner's manual though.
