Where do I begin????..... I have had more problems with my dang truck while towing our trailer on vacation than a person should ever have in a lifetime! This time, we didn't even make it more than 2 hours out of town; never made it to our destination-campground. The truck is still in the shop where it broke last Sunday (they "might" get to it tomorrow); the trailer is in storage near the shop at an RV park. Is it time to trade it in????????? It's a 2005 F-350 with manual tranny, 6.0L diesel, 38,000± miles.
Here's what happened THIS time: We'd been on the road on our first day of vacation for a couple hours when I needed a potty break, so we pulled off the freeway and parked alongside some houses across from McDonald's, I did my thing, got back in the truck, and it would NOT start. No check engine light, no nothing.....
The recent history is that last December on the way to Death Valley (while towing) the check engine light came on, but everything was running fine. A few cold starts later, the light went out. A day or two afterwards we were in the middle nowhere at Death Valley, turned off the truck to go take pictures, and it wouldn't start when we got back in. About 3-4 tries later and a tap on the accelerator and it finally turned over, but the check engine light was back on. It went out again a few cold starts later and I forgot all about it. In January, coming home from Pismo (while towing) the check engine light came on again. It was out the next day. I took it into the shop, and there were codes on 6 of the 8 injectors, so FORD replaced the Fuel Injector Control Modulator. I haven't seen the check engine light on since. But, it has had some repeated trouble turning over when COLD. Never had any problems starting when it's WARM, though, until last Sunday.
Luckily we were near a town with a Ford Dealer / Service Dept., so AAA towed the truck there and dropped it off (closed on Sunday). The towing company didn't have a single truck to tow our 5'er, but the owner's friend had a truck with a hitch in it, so for $100 cash he towed it to a nearby RV campground (which we have actually stayed at before). We were able to rent a pickup in town on Monday, so we did make a short day-trip to do our planned mountain bike ride & hike on Monday. But, when I called at the end of the day on Monday to see if the truck was fixed..... they hadn't even looked at it yet ~ argh!!!!!! They could have told me in the morning they weren't going to get to it, instead of saying, "We'll get right on it".
We went to FORD on Tuesday and talked to the diesel mechanic. He said the problem is that the oil pressure regulator (or pump?) (I think I have that right??) isn't working, so when the truck was warm, it wasn't building up enough oil pressure for it to start. (When he went to move it Tuesday morning when it was cold, it fired right up.) He said it was a good thing we stopped, because otherwise we could have blown up the whole engine if the pump blew out while it was running. He said they need to pull the whole engine out to get to the part that needs replacing. If they finish it this week, I guess we'll go pick up both the truck & the 5'er on Saturday, and bring 'em both home. What a waste of time and FUEL that will be.
I don't trust that damn truck any more. Every time we tow, something goes wrong! We have a trip planned to Moab, Utah in three weeks, and believe me, if we break down on the way there or back, there won't be a FORD dealer just down the road like last weekend. During the first year I had this truck we blew the innercooler line TWO TIMES while towing on the freeway (it wasn't fixed right the first time) and lost all power. The 2nd time was around midnight near Mammoth w/o cell phone reception (that was fun...). I had engine-surging problems (while towing & while trying to go slow in 1st gear) for the first year and a half until FORD did a recall & reflashed it. After the FICM was replaced last February, I had a spewing oil leak in the turbo line silicone coupler thingy. I mean, when is enough enough? Do I keep this rig or trade it in??? My last truck - a 2001 F-250 V-10 never had a single problem in 5 years - and the only reason we got the diesel F-350 was to tow the trailer.
Yea, I'm pretty frustrated right now!!!....... thanks for letting me vent

Sounds like the common leaking STC i think its called fitting on the hpop, I don't know the procedure to fix this but I've heard on here it was a common problem on the 05 06 trucks only when it was warm, once cooled off the truck would fire up no problem.
Mine had the same wont start when warm problem. It first happened on December 20, but I didnt get my truck into the shop til Jan 15; even took it to the beach for new years. I guess I was lucky after hearing what your mechanic said. It is the STC fitting by the way. Very common problem on these trucks and Ford has a new part to replace the defective old one.
As far as keeping the truck. I get frustrated with mine every now and then (edge blew the heads and the stc fittings went bad ), but as soon as i got them fixed the truck has been running great since. Puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it.
Hopefully the CAC tube is fixed now and once the STC fittings get fixed(one time thing...hopefully) the truck should run good for you.
Glad to see another mountain biker on here. I would love to go ride in Moab but that is quite a trip from Alabama. Good luck with the truck.
Note: With high diesel prices and the poor economy, it would probably be more cost effective to keep the truck. However, if you don't feel safe in it, it might be worth selling. My advice, give it one more chance, maybe all of her bugs will be worked out now.

Sounds like your cel was trying to tell you something 6 months ago. The thingy that they are replacing is a half a days work max, unless they are changing all the lines in the HPO system. Ask the the tech what else he is changing in the High Pressure Oil system besides the pump mounted Snap To Connect (SCT) fitting (ford has a newly designed part). For a laugh ask him how your truck was going to blow up from a loss of high pressure oil. When the truck wouldn't start cold it was likely the SCT fitting bleeding off oil pressure causing long crank times in order to rebuild pressure.
I had my hpop go out around 6 months ago. I was lucky that it just totally gave out. They replaced it and have had no problems since. I did notice that for a few weeks before it was taking a little longer to start. I would think that the hpop was your problem all along. Once fixed I have never heard of anyone having problems with it. It seems to be quite common for the 05 to have this problem. It is the only Ford related problem I have had with 54K on the odo.

Just to clarify a little. The HPOP fitting (snap to connect fitting - STC) is what commonly goes out. There is a support bracket install that corrects this and Ford has apparently had good success with it. International has a complete fitting replacement that they are recommending, but the bracket alone seems to be performing well. The HPOP itself is a relatively rare thing to fail (at least what I have been told).

Sounds like everyone agrees. HPOP connection!
My buddy's 05 F350 cancelled our trip with the same problem.
I had Matt (spartan) perform the fix on my truck when he did the Studs.
I trust my truck more than most trucks.
I have Studs, 8 new injestors, new fuel pump, almost new turbo, updated HPOP connection, custom tunes, and modded EGR cooler.
I think I'm ready.

I've heard it both ways -- one that they got this into engine builds towards the end of June/06 ('07 MY), the other is it never went into production motors and is only being done on a repair basis. I'd love to hear someone pipe up with a definative answer on it...

I'm glad for the feedback - it sounds like it's "fixable" and it probably won't happen again. I'm just wondering what will break next... I mean, it's literally been one thing after another after another with this truck. And it almost always happens to break down with the 5'er in tow!!!! It is so frustrating.
The truck was supposed to be ready last Thursday, but they called on Thursday and said it won't be ready until Tuesday next week. That means the following Saturday (the day I was supposed to be going to Newport Beach for my good friend's 60th B-day party) I'll be driving the opposite direction to pick up the truck instead. I have to go on Sturday 'cause I'm out of vacation days at work... We were supposed to be camping again this very minute, but no truck = no towing, and so here I am at home This sucks. At least I got a lot of yard work done today!

It's about 13.5 hours with the trailer for us; we split it into a full day and a half day, saying overnight at a rest stop outside St. George, Ut. This will be our third trip to Moab. Hubby likes the riding there better than I do - that steep slickrock makes me nervous - lol! Crashing on rock hurts more than crashing on dirt! Hiking at Arches National Park makes the trip a good one for me, though, and Canyonlands National Park is right there, too. It's worth the drive!
