Angry need help runs terrible.

03 f250 6.0 94,000 miles, banks six gun/pda, 06e17, no codes, new icp. Sometimes I can drive for hours and as long as i keep it running, it runs great. If i kill it and fire it back up it runs terrible. It won't stall, but there is no power. Makes plenty of boost. When I'm experiencing this problem, the truck sounds funny. It doesn't sound like a diesel. And if I give it too much throttle, it sounds like air is coming back through the air cleaner. If I let it sit overnight, It will run okay again. Any ideas? I am wondering if it could possibly be the barometric pressure sensor. Does anybody agree? And if so where is it located?

have you tried unhooking the banks and running it stock for a couple days? how about smoke? white or black? the sound your hearing through the muffler, dose it sound like a bunch of farts? When was the last time you cleaned your egr valve? have you ever had any turbo work done?

I would say - clean your turbo before you get "extra" plenty of boost.

I have run it without the programmer and it did the same thing. I hooked it back up to assist me in diagnosing the problem. It doesn't make too much boost, it just seems that the turbo is operating the way it should. It does sound like a bunch of farts coming back through the air filter, and when it makes that sound, boost falls a couple of pounds and it smokes for a second.

When I am experiencing this problem, it is very quiet under the hood. It doesn't make that loud racket like a diesel should. Could it be a fuel delivery problem?

PROBLEM HAS EVOLVED- Now it will run okay for the first 5 minutes of driving and then lose power. The sound of the engine completely changes and my tuner tells me the ebp input voltage is out of range. I took off my egr valve to clean it today hoping it was nasty. To my suprise it was very clean. I am starting to wonder if my turbo vanes are sticking. Any ideas?

Got word from a 6.0 Tech friend on this... it's probably a bad EGR valve or the last flash was not done properly.

You could try disconnecting the batteries for 30 minutes so the PCM will relearn the strategy.

Bump

I am going to scan this truck with my AE on friday. Is there any special things I should be looking for. I usually hang around the 7.3 forums....my 6.0 knowledge is limited. Hopefully the gurus here will get me pointed in the right direction. TIA

From the Tech Folder and vloney:

Lets try this--- For those of you that are having trouble after the latest round of reflashes, many times the problem is associated with the tech not fully completing the flash. After performing the reflash procedure, the tech is supposed to idle the vehicle for a minimum of five minutes. This allows the pcm to "relearn" egr and turbo operating strategies. There has been instances with an "incomplete relearn". When this happens, the tech has to do a kam reset, and perform the relearn procedure again. The new reflashes also add new pids(vgtlrn is one of them) when the relearn procedure is done correctly, the vgtlrn pid shows "yes". If it does not, the tech is instructed not to release the vehicle until it does. The procedure of taking control of vgt functions is one way of freeing up sticking vanes. With wds or ids go to datalogger, select vgtdc and rpm--- at idle ramp up vgtdc from 0% to 85% with 3 steps in between(several times may be necessary). The new reflash instructs the pcm to do the same when it sees slow operating, or stuck vanes. I will also do the same with egrdc to break them free.

More investigation is necessary. Give you a scenario; The reflashes shut the egr off after 5 minutes. What if your intake was completely plugged........air filter, egr throttle plate, debris in the air tube. The only place your engine gets any air, would be through the egr valve. Thus, after five minutes, the egr closes, and you're starving for air.

Probably either a stuck turbo, failing VGT actuator, or EGR problems.

I cleaned the turbo today. I was dissapointed to see it was very clean and everything moved freely. So I cleaned it anyway and put a light film of antisieze on the surfaces indicated in the article at forddoctors.com. After I got everything back together I tried to perform the vgt relearn procedure I found on these forums. It has the deep exhaust tone, the turbo is very quiet and makes no boost at low speeds and only 20psi at higher speeds. Could it be the actuator? Can the turbo go back together wrong? Or is it a problem with the flash? I forgot to add that the turbo doesn't cycle and the engine doesn't run any different with the actuator unplugged.

It could definitely be the vgt actuator sticking. If it's the egr you could unplug the electrical connection and drive it. It will pull an egr code if you do this, but from what I can tell on the 3 or so trucks I've done this to it does not negatively affect driving.
