the numbers on the block are real hard to read. could be c8ae (i thought it was a B at first, but now i know that would be impossible) and 6010/6015, but the heads seemed real clear. I will look at it again tomorrow and take a real camera with me instead of my cell phone camera.

When you see references to say c8ae-h or c1ae-a, are they getting the -h and -a from the second set of numbers just leaving the first 4 digits out?

Thanks so much for answering my questions. I really have been searching this stuff out on my own, but it seems there is a lot of contradictory info out there. Go figure.

Yes the full block casting number would be something like C3AE-6015-D. And right on the head numbers most of us leave out the 6090 head number here. So C8AE-6090-H would be a full head casting number.

If your block is a C8AE casting it should have 4 bolt motor mount bosses. Those were added to 64 and later blocks. Your C8 block would be a 68ish block depending on the date code. Could be a C3 block with only 2 bolt holes which is a 63 again depending on the exact date code.

Also 63 and earlier date codes (not casting numbers now) were larger 1/2" type and on the left side of the block above the oil filter adapter. 64 and later blocks the date codes were smaller 1/4" type and below the oil filter adapter on a small angled part of the block. And looking at it undert the truck it's upside down too.

this one?

Still having trouble finding the proper motor mounts. I have tried plugging in alot of different car models on the parts websites tehn looking at pictures of the motor mounts they have. most of the car ones I see have three mounting holes, but my block only has two:

I would stay with the mounting plates, IMO I see no real weakness in using them.

You aren't going to find a factory or after market replacement mount to match those holes and have the proper connection to the frame towers. There were no factory mounts to match your situation. I used the plate system, 1/4" plate I believe, with a well built 390 and towed and played with the truck for 10 years with no sign of stress at the mounts.

That casting number looks like C3AE-6015-H which was the service 390 PI block for the C3AE-6015-E solid lifter PI block. The C3AE-6015-H is a hyd lifter block.

Putt is right on the steel plates.

BTW date code is on the other side. Left and right side are determined from sitting inside the car. So left side is the dr side.....right side the pass side.

I guess I'll make some new ones then. These plates are not 1/4" and the holes have wallowed out. Thanks for the help fellas.

You could always add steel to stiffen it up, kind of like an "I" or "[" shape if you were to look at it from the end.

I never had to go there, so I couldn't tell you how much to add and still have enough clearance.

I was also wondering how to do this myself. I recently Bought a unpunched 1961 390 and it only has 2 holes just like the one in the picture. I figured I would have to build some adaptor plates and it looks like I figured right. Mine also doesnt have the block taped for the alt, but thru this forum was able to find a after market kit to let me put a Alt on that block. Im not big on making adaptors but if no one make's em I guess you got to do it yourself :/

LOL I'm cheap, I'd rather put that money in the gas tank.

I am looking at a C3AE-6015-E block which I would like to buy but all the references say it should have "KY" as the suffix. Tell me more about the service vs original PI block.

Thanks

Just a little update.

Continued researching because I just don't like this whole adapter plate and found some good info...from ebay no less. Anyway from reading the how to rebuild your big block book i found that in 65 they went to a 4 hole mount so that left only 1963 and 1964 for years that my engine could have come from. Finally google serach led me to an ebay listing for 1963 390 engine mounts and they were kind enough to list the part number. 2222 from anchor industries. Referencing that part number in Advance and O'Reilly's webiste did find the mounts. Weird thing is that on the site if I look it up by part number and then click on "what vehicles does this part fit" if gives me a list of 1964-64 Ford cars such as the galaxie, country squire, and custom. If i go back in with that kind of car and search for engine mounts, it comes up with nothing.

So moral of the story if you have a block like mine part numbers 2222 and 2223 will get you the correct motor mounts to bolt to this block.

Also of note, they are of a design that is similar to the truck design so it appears that I will be able to bolt them to the block and then to the mount towers will little to no modification. I won't know for sure until tomorrow since O'Reilly's had to order them for me.

BTW ebay price is $50 each and parts store prices is $13.99 and $14.99 respectively.
