If the service ports look a bit like tire valves and have external threads for the cap, you have an R-12 system. There will also be a pressure releif valve on the hose manifold at the rear of the compressor.
If the service ports look more like male air hose fittings (they're quick connect fittings) and have internal threads for the cap, you have an R134-A system. There will also be a 2 wire switch on the compressor hose manifold or on the high side line going to the condenser.
