I have an 86 Bronco with 351W 5.8L. What is the easiest way to identify whether is is just a 351W or 351W w/ EGR. I was looking around on Edelbrock's site and noticed that it was seperated into these two. I'm just getting into messing with my bronco and an looking at different parts.

Most likely that it has EGR if its the origional motor in the truck. Look at the centerdome behind the carb, there should be a large vacuum pot sticking up at an angle. If its there, than it has EGR.

Is it possible to remove the EGR plate from under the carb and run it that way?

The non-EGR intake will fit on a motor that came with EGR. Simple as bolting the carb onto the new manifold, without the EGR plate underneath it. I put a Performer RPM non-EGR on my 351w and nothing went together any differently. Mostly a question as to whether your state allows you to mess with the emissions of your engine.
ive got 351W with egr. I replaced egr spacer with aluminum spacer(open plenum)and lost all peformance. ordered a new spacer (4 hole plenum). in meantime took egr spacer, seperated egr from nut(part of egr)that screws into spacer and closed off the hole left from the egr(1/4") with a nut and bolt. worked perfect. got the new spacer in and threw that on and it worked perfect too. the only difference is one was nice to look at.

I'm trying to reduce the heighth of my engine for my Ranger. The way I see it is as long as the holes to the EGR system are blocked by the baseplate of the carb, you don't need a spacer. Is this true thinking?
By the way, what do you mean about the 'centerdome'?

You will still need some sort of a spacer, but you could probably find something thinner than the EGR plate. There is not enough room for the throttle arm to move if you place the carb on a Ford EGR intake without the EGR plate.
