Hi guys, I am new to this and need help.
I have a 56 COE with a Yblock in it. I was told it ran fine before it was parked 4 years ago and it is a friend and I have no reason to doubt them. Now I know it needs a battery and they said it needed a fuel filter, they installed one but it leaks. I am wondering if they moght mean the fuel pump.
My question is, what should I do before I trying to start it up?
I went over today and sprayed carb cleaner on the carb and cleaned it up just a little, brushed away the cob webs etc. There is oil on the dip stick. I will check the water in the radiator.
When I put a new battery in I will also add fresh gas to the tank, (5 gallons) and use some starter fluid in the carb. I did spray some starter fluid in the carb today even though I did not turn it over.
What should I do? Anything I should NOT do. I do not want to ruin the motor if it is fine by being stupid.
Well, you could do what I did. I pulled the distributor and made a little shaft to turn with a drill. I turned the oil pump from above (counter-clockwise) until I saw oil pressure.
On my newly rebuilt 292 that is going to be bolted to an E4OD before it goes in my F-600, I used a speed wrench and turned the oil pump by hand.
I got about 50 psi just turning it with the hand crank (speed wrench) But it's essentially a new engine.
You should also probably put a little light oil (WD-40 mixed with some oil etc) in each cyl. and turn the engine over. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to remove the valve covers when you're cranking the oil pump to see if you get oil at the rockers.
You might want to see if the fuel pump works. (and doesn't just pump the crankcase full of fuel!)
You can also check and see if you have any stuck valves that way...
Pictures! Post pictures!
Good luck!
Rick

I would check your tank and see how old the gas is. Maybe clean gas in a gas can 1st. I have done this a few times and -I usually change everything possible before start-up. I mean fluids, tune up and plugs and wires. IF IT RAN BEFORE. I know some guys say don't spend money till you know it is a good engine--but I am no mechanic and figure I will replace the stuff anyhow......Bill
Did they put pitcocks on the fuel tanks or some sort of drain plug? I should drain the gas thats a good idea. I was going to put new gas in but never thought to take the old stuff out Dahhhhhh. That is why I posted.
I am not up to pulling the valve covers and heads and going that far.
They said they put a new fuel filter on and it leaks because it is not the right one. I do not know how these fiters attached but is it a inline filter or a screw in carb filter? I am wondering if they are meaning the fuelk pump attached to the block? Any thoughts about this?
Disconnect the fuel line at the pump and drain it from there - I would think that would be the easiest to get to. My filter is in a screw off can on my pump - '63 F100 292.

Ok you guys have given me great info. I am heading over there tomorrow (Sat) and looking things over and figureing out my plan of attack. I will check the fuel tank, probably drop it and flush it out. Check the fuel lines and replace it need be. Then find this fuel filter and figurte out why it does not fit. Then pull the plugs and use mystry oil in each cylander. Can I leave the oil in there for a week? I plan on going back next sat and work on it some more. I doubt I will get it all tomorrow.
I did clean it up a bit last week, heck it is actually blue under all that grease and grim.
Thanks
Jeff
One time I had an old dirtbike that was really frozen up, and I just poured some Mystery Oil in there and let it sit over night. The next day, I went to kick it, and it turned right over. A little more work and it ran!
How true me and my friend used it every time we would crank up a old engine that had been siting for god knows how long just pour some in each cyl unplug the hot wire to your dist and crank it a few times to coat every thing and then hook every up and fire her right up. did it on his grandma 74 Buick that had sat for over 20 years....

Well We were pulling the spark plugs and got all but one out. The last plug is seized up and it is under the cab (COE) drivers side. My buddy that was helping ended up rounding off the sparkplug and not only is it siezed but now rounded. I ordered a 13/16 socket extractor and hopefully that will work along with more juice and maybe trying the cold spray. I am so frustrated! The plug is broken off and is extremly hard to get to being under the floorboard of the cab. No way to get it from under either. Can't get a drill in there to tap it out even.
I am going to try several times this week useing the canned air to chill it and then spray liqued wrench in it. I figure if I do that a dozen times when the extractor comes in it will be easier to get out. And yes I spray a half a can before I started pulling the plugs.
Any other suggestions?
