hey guys, i have a 98 Expy w/ a 4.6 169k miles. the engine light is on, i am getting codes P0401 & P1408. i have had the EGR replaced, O2 sensor and the light is still on.
from doing some searching, it seems i need to clean the TB and the plenum elbow. i don't know exactly what this looks like but i would like to see a picture or diagram of what i need to work on.
btw, i am NO mechanic but i am good w/ my hands so i want to give it a try myself.
Well, I don't have a picture right off, but the black air intake from the air cleaner hooks to the throttlebody. When you remove the air intake tube, you will see the throttle blade in the TB. The plenum elbor is what the TB is bolted to.
is there another name for the DPFE sensor? i have been searching for it on Advance Auto & Autozone websites and can't find anything named DPFE. also what is the cost to replace it (parts only)?
is it feesable to replace the TB plenum elbow or just clean it out? if it is readily available and not too expensive, it may be worth while to me to just replace it instead of spending time to clean it out.
thanks for the reply guys. after looking at what the DPFE actually is, i have already replaced it along w/ a brand new EGR valve. so now i am hoping this weekend i will have time to try and clean out the "plenum" elbow (i think thats the correct term). from what i have read it gets clogged up and can cause the code too.
any insight on cleaning this part out?
thanks again, please keep the info cming for a newbie!
did you clear the code. it will not shut off by itself like the older ones.
Yes. i actually had it at a garage. they replaced the egr valve and then they cleared the code. they said for me to drive it some and that should clear the history and then bring it back so they could inspect it for emissions. well about 100 miles later, they light came back on. so i took it to Advance Auto and they ran the codes for me. code P0401 and P1408. they said the codes were old and not actually current. so he was able to turn the light off. well 45 miles later, it was back on!
