I am looking at buying an 84 4x4 ranger. v6 w/ auto, what do you think this will make on fuel mileage? has auto w/o od, i think
pick will need a little work, but I looking for something that will do better on gas than my f250 superduty. probably mainly around town driving. close hunting trips.
Are their any problems that I should look for when I go look at it?
Should I spend more money and get one with a fuel injected engine? Or would a 4 cylinder do better on fuel?
owner says that the flywheel has some broken teeth on it. Other than that it is drivable.
thanks for your help

My old '86 2.9 4x4 with the A4LD auto gave me 20/21 mpg on the highway.
A great little truck.
A flywheel with broken teeth isn't a plus, though. That will eat up starters and will have to be dealt with asap. Unless you are a mechanic [your post suggests you're not] then expect tying up a weekend dealing with it. If the price is right then go for it.
It is a fun little 4x4 that, within reason, will do all that you ask of it.

"YOU DON'T NEED A BLOODY CHERRYPICKER TO GET THINGS OUT OF THE BED"
In the early years 83-97, you could get a ranger 4x4 with the 4 cylinder. It would be decent on gas and still get you to your favorite hunting spots. There's not near as many as there are V-6's, but there's a few around still. Between the early V-6's, I would say the fuel injected 2.9 gets better mpg than the carbed 2.8. If it has a good body, you could swap in any engine, the 2.9, 2.3, 5.0 or 4.0. I'm thinking about swapping in a 4.0 in my 88 4x4 as it's rust free and worth putting a little money into.

For the '84 4x4, the V-6 was a 2.8L. The 2.9L came in the 2WD. I also remember that the gas mileage in my old '84 2.8L. was less than the mileage I got in my '91 4.0L (both 4x4).
To fix that flywheel, you have to pull the engine or the trans, and to pull the trans you may have to pull the TC.
RUN from this truck. Remember, Ranger has been a best seller for years. They are like sand on the beach. Find one without the 2.hate solid-lifter clatterbox, and without a major repair needed.
Imagine the joy of getting out and rotating the engine by hand to get to a good part of the flywheel so you can start it.
I just realized something, your name is Wendal also, but I spell mine Wendell. Aren't we quit the odd balls, to guy's named Wendal who like first generation rangers, whats the odd's hee hee?
