1989 Ranger Fuel Gauge??

hey all, I am the proud new owner of a 1989 Ragner 2.3L 5 Speed. Picked it up today for farm work. I do have a question:
1.) I filled the tank up and the gauge went to 3/4, drove about 15 miles and it moved to 1/4 tank, about 20 miles later it moved to 3/4, then right past the full level. What would cause this and how do I fix it?

thanks, where would i need to look for this ground at? we checked the gauge cluster and everything was good, including the gas needled itself when power was applied to it.

Mine has a mind of its own.Replaced the fuel pump....fuel pump decided to kick on at its own leisure...while trying to fix the problem the fuel gauge woud go to full[ank is full] and Id cut the key off. Then cut it back on[Im checking to see if fuel pump is on] and the gauge would start to fall. Each time I turned the key off/on it would steadily go back to empty. Then repeat.Fuel pump is working again[wires from tank to pump] but the gauge is showing 1/4 tank. Its a mystery

I paid $5.00 for a float at the local Ford dealer.

float

my 1987 read empty, i knew it was the brass float, i went to the junkyard, and got one, then i filled the truck up, it went past full, pulled out of the gas station, hit a bump it started to fluctuated down to half, 3/4 and after driving some it started to work properly, im assuming the float had been broke so long and only filled to a 1/4 and 1/2 in that period, that some corrosion was on the sending unit, causing a bad connection, after moving around alittle with a full tank it cleaned itself up and started to work, this is my guess being the sending unit is a resistor switch.
