I am going to be putting a 351w into my truck. It is an 86 f-150. I wanted to out a carbureted engine into it, but I cant seem to find one anywhere. I was told by a few guys at wrecking yards that barbed ones are hard to find, but they can find a injected one really easy. I just wanted your guys opininion and information.
thanks

Buy an injected one and convert it to a carb. I did this to a 302. I had to change the the front timing cover for a fuel pump, and get the eccentric for the front of the camshaft, and of course an intake manifold. I also put the older style valve covers on so the PCV valve and such would fit better. I changed the dist(never had the dreaded gear compatibility problem in 8 yrs) and there may be something I forgot, but it's not too hard. The good thing is the later motors will have less miles on them.

i got pissed at my 88 351w and you would be impressed with what i ended up with after a carb manifold and cam kit from jegs with msd blaster ign. grinned all the way some pointers

1 on the back of efi heads there are two ports that are connected by a pipe i cut the pipe off and turned the end blocks backwards and bolted them back on

2 if you are efi now (?) dont forget a fuel pressure regulator

3 would recomend a elect fuel pump easier than swapping out all the other for a manual pump

4 keep your dist you will need your old one to match your existing ignition system or even if you want to go after market you will need the one you have

5 plan on an approach for your exaust i welded shut the ports in mine rather than replacing them

6 other than that have a good time

Smile, you are still leaving ignition timing control to the computer? I don't know about that, who knows what it is doing. Have you ever checked it with a timing light to see if it advances. If you are going to ditch the ecu, I say go all the way.
