Post 351 Windsor Identity Crisis

I think I have a 351 Windsor - at least that's what the seller told me. Truck is a '77 and originally had a 'G' code (302?) engine.

According to my Haynes manual, the distributor firing order matches that of the 351 and NOT the 302. However, when I went to buy a new cap and rotor, I found that the 351 cap is much larger than what I have... bought a cap/rotor for a '77 302 and they fit. Did a PO reuse the original distributor (it has a numbered tag on it)?

Again according to Haynes manual, intake 'looks' like the drawing for a 302/351W with the thermostat housing coming in from right front and a nice round space for the distributor. HOWEVER, mine has twelve bolts and not sixteen shown in the manual.

Timing marks are on the vibration damper but I CAN'T find the pointer arrow anywhere - part left off by some PO?? Help!

Transmission is now definitely a 18 bolt pan C6 instead of the original 'G' code C4, so I suspect the entire drivetrain from something like an LTD was dropped in.

What have I got? If there is supposed to be a block ID on the outside of the engine somewhere, please tell me specifically where to spray degreaser to look for it. Thanks. - Jeff in WV

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Nov-01 AT 08:09*PM (EST)]Verify that you have six bolts holding the valve covers on. If you don't, get back to us. Now, look at the timing cover area next to the front of the head. If the flange/mounting area is right up against the bottom of the head, it's a 302. If there is some flat area or space on front of the block between the timing cover and the bottom of the head, it's a 351w.

I am going to post some pictures of a 302 and a 351. Look at the water passage holes on front of the engine and how they are close to the head mounting area on a 302, but far away from the head mounting area on a 351w

This is a 302 engine-look at the holes near the front of the head for the water pump.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Nov-01 AT 08:42*PM (EST)]I can't get the other picture to load. But if you look the waterpump holes, and then the threaded holes that are above the large holes-see how they are almost flat on top near where the head bolts on? The heads are not close to these bolt holes on a 351w.

Look on the lower, left side of the engine. Near the back under the head. It's actually kinda behind the motor mount. That's where you will find the casting number. Some degreaser and a wire brush should make it legible.

Thank you VERY MUCH for the great pictures. Yes, my engine is definitely a Windsor with six bolt valve covers.

So now all I have to figure out is why it has a 302 distributor and is missing the timing pointer.

Post 351 Windsor Identity Crisis

I have found the following on the left rear of my block lightly stamped into a machined pad just under the rear of the cylinder head gasket: 8H61 1962.

This was all I could find there. Any idea on how to decode it? I understand that an 'H' code in the VIN is used to identify the 351 engine.

Also, the intake manifold is D5AE-9425-DG with a 6E4 (date?) on it. 1975 full size ford?

TIA. - Jeff

PS: Distributor tag is D60E 12127 AA 5L25, carb tag is D8KE DA B 7K19, and C6 tranny is PGD BC10 B1 E0TP CA 025627).
