Actually, all of the big three used the aluminum gears with nylon covered teeth in an effort to help hush down the noise from the chain and your right, they don't last long. Replacing it with steel gears is the best you can do.
I don't know when they stopped using them if they even stopped.
As far as the rest of the engine, it's going to last a long time if assembled right. The gear has nothing to do with it. I recently replaced a stripped gear on my donor engine and it runs great.
