RTV, Gasket or both? for 1985 302 intake manifold?
me again,
looks like the rear part of my intake manifold is leaking oil. When I get up the nerve to remove and replace it should I use RTV, a gasket, both or what? Any other tips I should know prior to tackling this job? I relieved that it wasn't the rear main engine seal leaking though. Thanks for all the help...
I've tried to upload a pic of my old ford truck.....

Just a little dab in the four corners will do it. Don't use too much though. Just a little strip maybe 1/2" long. Four strips of RTV on the Intake and another four on the oil pan is all you need to rebiuld an entire motor. Use more and you will likely pay for it later. I bought a van that had a 302 in it and when I took the motor all apart the oil pump pick up screen was completely full of this junk, that is what caused the thing to starve for oil, that and the previous owner must have kept running it anyhow, neither the block or crank was useable after that. Good quality gaskets are the trick, Felpro!!
Good Luck !!

I always use the silicon only on the ends instead of the gaskets. You can use the gaskets, but do like the other poster did and use contact cement to glue them to the block. They squish out of position if you don't, and that is what causes them to leak later.

You should use some gasketcinch(or similar) on the intake to head gaskets. I haven't used the intake to block gaskets on the last 4 motors I've built. A bead of black or blue RTV has sealed everything from small block Fords to the big block chevy in my boat. Never had a leak.

Thanks tons guys. I think it is mostly leaking between the intake and engine block in the rear and a very small amount in the front too. I'll post a follow-up and tellya all what happens. It's gettin cold here so I might not shuffle around to this project for awhile. This message board/group is worth a great deal to me. I hope I can help with some answers tooo sometime.

I got some tips for you redhead.....I like to cut a few (3) 5/16's 3 inch bolts I think the intake bolts are and make studs for alignment purposes cuz when your bending over a 1981 pickup the fender sticks up not low like a 1979....you could easily mess up gasket. Also I like to coat both sides of cork back and front intake with some rtv lightly. Also I like to only put a bead arond top/bottom of intake gasket water area's in rear(circles). Then take out the studs after lowering intake in place.
